Kit in Question:

Canon EOS400D
18-55mm kits lens and Canon 75-300mm III USM

I have just bought a Hoya Pro1 Digital Circular Polarizer to use with the above lenses. They are currently protected by a Hoya 58mm UV[0] and a 58mm Skylight respectively.

The question is should I add the Polarizer to these filters or replace them with it?

Personally I replace any filters I have on when I use a polariser. Two reasons. One I get vignetting if I shoot wide with filters stacked and two, the UV is only there to protect the lens and there is no point in having both on at the same time as the polariser then does that job too.

The truth is I hate filters on my lenses anyway! :)

I can understand that, but I have real difficulty getting sky definition hence the Circ PL.

Take the UV filter off (then ebay it if you ask me) before using the CPL.

Oh I'll happily use a CPL and grads when required. I just hate crap UV's! lol

Dont wear a coat outside if it's not cold

Presumably the Hoya Filters are just such??

There seem to be good and bad ones out there and I'm not even going to guess which are which! I did have a truly horrible example on a 70-200 f4 that nearly led me to sell the lens........turned out it was the filter and it's as sharp as the contents of a cutlery drawer!

I think it's not a problem or poor quality in low cost filters so much as a lack of consistent quality so you never know what you're getting

Personally I don' think either of the OP's lenses are worth enough to justify the cost of a decent quality UV filter, but thats just my 2p.

;) Thank you, I feel so much better now. Seriously, I know the kit lens is held in low regard, but I was under the impression that the Canon 75-300 USM III was somewhat better? Bearing in mind a limited budget!
