Hi,

I wonder if any of you can help regarding a Canon 70-200 2.8L lens. I managed to buy one from an eBay seller at what I feel is a very good price, it has a scratch on the lens which I knew about at the time of purchase, however it has several more smaller chips around the periphery of the lens as well.

I do know that scratches like these have little effect on the lens as can be seen from the pic below and certainly the smaller chips are so near the outside of the lens that they will definitely NOT be seen.

The body has a few well worn rub marks, but paint only has come off if you know what I mean. It has no doubt had a lot of use as the zoom and focus feel slack but not rattly.

Wasn't too happy that the other chips on the lens hadn't been highlighted in the listing so I emailed the seller about a refund and he said no problem, but he also offered to have the front element replaced.

The lens is date coded 1996 so nearly 11 years old, the question I put to anyone out there that could help me, do I return it for refund and buy a better condition more expensive younger one or do I let him get it repaired and I keep it.

He is sending me a cheque and has said that I can return lens once I cash it so pretty trusting on his part. Or do I keep hold/cash the cheque and then return lens for repair and then return his cheque/cash

Is 11 years old much of a problem?

Sample image taken this am :

Cropped and sharpened and then Noise Reduced at it was ISO 400.

Any help/opinions greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Mike.

All I can say is

Are you happy with what you got for your money ?

If you have it repaired will you be happy with what you have for your money ?

what ever you answer you have your decision.

Only you can make this call as it was your money

HArd to tell given you've cropped the shot, but i'm assuming the chips have not translated into belimishes or refractions?

Personally, if i couldn't detect any image issues and i bought the lens cheaply, i'd leave the lens as is - but your money and your call and more importantly, your satisfaction with what you have

Hi,

Thanks for the replies guys, having read through my waffle above I realise that the main question is this:

Is it worth getting an 11 year old L lens repaired?

Bearing in mind that it will be repaired free of charge.

Thanks,

Mike.

Ah - with you:)

Cant hurt i guess - just in case any gremlins crept in there over time.....

The image looks very good so I think I would keep it and get it repaird.:)

These lenses are meant to last a life time so the age shouldnt really become an issue so long as it works, in fact alot of people would recommend the older glass as the quality is quite often a little better, only you can decide what to do depending on price, the sample image provided does look very sharp so thats a plus.

If you do feel totally mislead over the transcation though I would just return the whole package and get a refund, otherwise it will eat away at you.

You have to think about a few things.... Was the price still a bargain for 11 years old in that condition?

If the other chap is prepared to send off for repair, is it still worth the price you paid for it?

Do you think that you have been so misled that you feel its best to walkaway from the deal?

If the answer to any of these is NO, then send it back for a refund. Otherwise, I believe the seller is attempting to be amicable about it all.

I think you have kind of answered your own question, if you are a little unhappy already, this niggle may grow to a larger one in a further few weeks, don't risk getting more frustrated and send it back once cheque is cashed. Only my own opinion, but I'd probably do the same. Hope it helps. Cheers Neil
