Question about Microsoft and unsuccessful sign ins.

I got a scammer email from myself. I've had these before and nothing has ever come of them but today I decided to change my password and once I'd done that I looked at my sign in history and saw many unsuccessful sign in attempts from all over the world with lots of attempts to sign in every day. Microsoft say there's nothing to worry about as all attempts were unsuccessful.

Has anyone else seen this?

I wonder how and why my email address has gone all around the world and has people trying to sign in?

I can't remember buying anything from a dodgy source recently but I suppose Amazon and Ebay may have dodgy people on them.

Is this anything to worry about? Is there anything I should do?

No, though I don't use an MS account.

I wonder if particular emails are more prone to such "attacks"?

Is it the likes of Hotmail, Gmail etc???

I have no idea if attempts to log onto accounts are routine or not as I don't think I've ever looked at my attempted log in history before. I just find it all a bit worrying.

I've had this sort of email before, they claim to have inserted a trojan onto my pc etc... and I have to pay them in crypto. I always ignore them. I have no idea why and how I and probably others are targeted. Data breach from somewhere maybe?

I go through periods of getting a dozen or so unsuccessful attempts a day. Usually I notice bc I get a one time code I never asked for. I just ignore them. Worth making sure any MS account is very secure though - long passwords + 2fa. It's amazing how much damage somebody can do if they get into your email.

Thanks Jonathan. I feel a bit more secure knowing other people get these and also get the pass codes which I don't get. looks like you scammers are a bit more persistent than mine.

So, it looks like what I'm seeing could be being seen by others and may be rather normal? I expect companies sell our email addresses and eventually they end up with the wrong people.

Back to the scammer email I got from my own address demanding money... They say they have video of me pleasuring myself watching porn. Well. Good for them but it aint me

I surmise they rely on "the fear factor" and all it takes is for a/one recipient to have something to fear......to be hooked & hoodwinked!

I'd be more likely to pay if they'd threatened to tell Mrs WW I keep looking at cameras, lenses and cars. But, she knows this already

But yes, if a tiny fraction of people pay up their effort is worth it.

It probably means your email address was involved in a data leak somewhere and someone (or something) is having a go.. browse to haveibeenpwned.com to see if any of your email addresses have been leaked, it's kinda scary..

I think, the best thing you can do is use the authenticator app and MFA..

Yup. Found in six date breaches.

I have no idea what these are. I don't use apps or at least not on a phone or tablet. My banking and internet shopping and browsing is done on a lap top. I have bookmarks for the likes of Amazon and Ebay and I get to banks by typing into Google and clicking on the link.

I'll look into what these things are but so far these attempts to access seem pretty primitive so maybe aren't too much to worry about?

I've just tried Mrs WW's email address and she's found in one date breach.
