Question about car insurance renewal

No
I didn't renew my car insurance until the day it was supposed to be renewed because I thought it would be renewed automatically. I searched online for the cheapest insurance and I got it £80 cheaper than my renewal quote. I renewed it with this quote. This year I received a letter saying they couldn't renew it because of a problem with the payment card.

The new cheaper quote was with the same company as last year.

I have now received a letter asking me to send my Certificate of Motor Insurance back to them.
Should I ring them and tell them I've renewed?

I would certainly ring them just make sure you are still covered.

I am covered. I've checked online. But I'll probably ring them and ask if they still want the certificate.

I wouldn’t rely on just the online check if you have nothing in writing - which you haven’t if they have told you they think you have not paid.

I would phone them up and tell them you've renewed - do you have an e-mail or payment confirmation for you new insurance - to confirm you are covered ?

Have you checked your bank to ensure the funds have actually been taken?

You didn't renew. You went with a fresh quote from the same company. (If I understand the first post correctly). They won't treat it the same as renewal.

That’s what I understood but he didn’t say he had cancelled the renewal which may be the source of the conflict.

Forgot about this post. Had flu then back ache, meanwhile I reset the pc.

Received a letter about not renewing and they said to send the certificate back. That was a couple of weeks ago and I still haven't done it. Not too fussed about it really. If they want to ring me about it, then they can.

You may not be fussed but in any disagreement between you and the insurer I know who I’m backing to win :(

have you paid and received a valid certificate of insurance?

Yes he has (see OP) but the insurer has asked him to return it which to me says they do not believe he is insured.:(

The OP seems to be behaving like a bit of a muppet which id why I asaked

When an insurance company renews a policy automatically, some will send the certificate out early, so that you will have the certificate on or before the renewal date. If however you then notify them that you don't wish to renew the policy, they will request the return of the certificate to prevent fraudulent use.

I wouldn’t go so far as that. The problem is he is convinced that he has renewed and so believes the insurer is mistaken. Probably he is right - since we don’t know all the details - but he still should get the insurer to clarify because the risk of being wrong is so high :(

New quote was with the same insurer and yes I am insured with them, so no point in sending the certificate back

Sounds to me like you're just really angry and expecting some kind of apology from them which just comes across as arrogant.

you need to remember you have had a different quote which may even be with a different insurer so you might be insured but not with the company on the original document.
many insurance companies now are just brokers that pick from a wide range of insurers.

for piece of mind you should call them up and clarify everything.
