Quality Number Plates?

I've just collected a new to me car. The dealer did my number plate transfer and supplied a new set of number plates. To say they are cr*p is an understatement, they look like numbers placed on a flimsy bit of plastic and run through a domestic laminator and trimmed off with a pair of scissors. I need to replace them with a quality set, like the ones you could get 20 years ago with the numbers set between 2 sheets of quality Acrylic with rounded and polished edges. I've looked all over the web and suppliers are promising a 12 month warranty against fading at best, for plates that cost no more than £20.....but I want a proper set.....Any Ideas???

My local shop does proper plates, but I've had a car fitted with plates from these guys in the past, they had the domed Carbon effect letters/numbers. Looked pretty smart though not really legal. (I didn't buy them, tehy were already on the car)

Quite tempted o get a set of "show plates" made up for the Royal Enfield. I like the look of the pressed Aluminium, polished on black ones like I had on my old Landy but the RE is 2010 registered so they wouldn't be legal. Will have to research penalties!

Are the self adhesive type of front 'plate legal? Mrs Nod's car would look far better with one of them on the bonnet rather than the one currently impeding the airflow through the front "mouth".

FTR, my research seems to indicate that it's a £50 FPN for wrong 'plates (and for no helmet).

Strange comment. The same can be said for cameras, they all take pictures so does it really matter which you have, you have a Nikon D7000 your choice
Not strange at all.
What do you do with your number plates apart from read them?
I can understand having a smart car etc, but number plates serve no other purpose than to identify your car.
It does annoy me though when I see a new car with a squint plate

TBH as long as it isn't obviously illegal (stupid font etc) then you're very unlikely to be pulled up on it. There are some cunning ways to cut down on the size of number plates though whilst being totally legal.

Well Robert, I'll tell you what I'm doing with them. At the moment they are on the dining room table waiting for the glue to dry in an attempt to stop them falling apart, hence the need for some better quality ones.

Speaking as someone who have been only able to afford £1500 bangers over the years until I gave up driving altogether five years ago, I would think that should I spend just as much on a brand new car as I have on my mortgage (20K), I would at least want decent quality plates attached to it, not some cheap ones cobbled together in a back room. I think it's the least the consumer deserves.

Thanks, I had a look at these, but to be honest they don't do it for me. The front plate will need to fixed on a slight curve, that's why I'm looking for Acrylic.
My Audi has a curve at the front. Metal is perfect as you can bend/roll them and this become a perfect fit without strain.

I used to have 1972 plates but it was on a 1995 car. I honestly didn't realise the age of the car mattered and just the plate. So mine were black with silver. I was pulled over £50 fine plus a £15 victim surcharge ;) I asked who the victim was, never got an answer.

Our local Car bits shop has a massive selection and some daft prices too but I think it you get what you pay for and I agree crap plates do detract from a nice motor

If you get pulled for a non standard/legal plate be nice to the man. The fine can go up to £1000.

Well that's different, you didn't say they were falling apart.:)

Ah! So they don't have the swaged stiffened edge that used to kink if you tried to curve them? Are they aluminium?
No it is pressed steel. Do it carefully and it will be ok. I think I rolled it gentle on a roll of kitchen towel. Patience and a lot of time and it is perfect. It is pretty solid, doesn't snap easily as I understand what you described.

Aha! Found a pic of the demon plates ones:

and going a bit OT @rpsmith79 might recognise this shot...

Any idea how long Ant had the plates on the car?

Check your local Halfords, they do plates though I've no idea what the quality is.

Ahh, fond memories of Gen 5 Celicas :)

I think Ant had them on for the whole time he had that car, at least 3 years i'd say

There's an ST185 in town for £1500. I've been drooling over it for years and am struggling not to buy it, I mean I'm going to need 4wd in the winter to get to work
