Yes
Have a Sigma 70-300 APO but still considering a Nikon 70-300 for garden birds. Nikon fan❗
eBay lists 15 (yes 15) as “Faulty”
or “Haze” “Fungus” etc
No problems with Sigma
Any ideas on Nikon QC ?

Of course but still many examples listed as faulty
I’m going to stay with my Sigma after all

Am I correct in reading an AF-P lens won’t focus at all on my Nikon D300
According to Ken Rockwell lens compatibility chart. ?

Nor the Nikon D90❗

Do you mean the AF-S 4.5-5.6 ED VR? Mine I think is OK. I honestly don't know if there is any sort of issue with QC but it seems unlikely. This lens came out nearly 20 years ago so some examples could be quite old. Also zooms like this pump air in and out all the time in use so they are going to acquire dust if they are heavily used. Going by the serial number mine is a later example but it will still be 10+ years old in all probability and is completely clean.

I have bought several lenses from MFP and I always go for the best condition with no mention of dust, which I equate with heavy use. I avoid anything with mention of 'moisture' 'fungus' 'dust' etc which curiously never affect the image. Moisture in particular I find puzzling. If it was water it would only need to be kept in a dry place for a while and it would disappear.

FWIW I have briefly compared the 70-300 lens on the full frame D750 with the DX 18-140 (30-210 equivalent) on a D5500 for garden birds. I need to do some more, more carefully, but I think the crops are just as good from the latter. The 18-140 on the D750 is as expected much worse, because only about 10MP of the 24MP sensor are used.

That is right about AF-P lenses.

The 70-300 VR lens is meant to be okay. As is the Tamron equivalent.

Seems MPB would not agree.
A lens I sent them a few weeks ago, they downrated because of signs of moisture.

The lens had been stored at 24C and a humidity of 40% or less for the last 18 months. It was wrapped in a way it could not have picked up any moisture on the way to them.
Nobody else can see any signs of moisture though :)

Like you I would not touch anything with the mention of issues, and would take any description as wishful thinking until I had checked it!

Thanks all for the info. I dismissed the VR as I’ll be using a tripod and the non-VR is cheaper. However I’ll lose money selling the Sigma and even a non-VR in vgc is £100+
