Been using these for a while (Nikon) and misplaced the user guide. I thought I could just push the button on a hand held trigger to fire my remote flashes (also using RF-603's), but seemingly not. What is the button for?

I've got RF-603s (Canon), but not used them for a while. I might be wrong, but isn't the button for remote shutter release, assuming you've got another one attached to your camera with a sync cord?

The button is is to trigger another receiver on the camera to operate remote shooting.First press activates camera AF,press further, shutter fires,as Darren says the sync cord has to be plugged in and I dont think the shutter will fire if AF hasnt been achieved

I think you might be right about that. In other words, its remote shutter.
