Today I decided to get the Canon EOS1000D with the 18-55 IS lens. I know most will say I should have got the 450D but as it's my first camera I didn't want to spend that much and the spec seems good enough for me at the moment to get used to and to learn what I am doing.

I compared the Canon to the Nikon D60 with 18-55VR, I thought the Nikon felt a lot heavier and not as comfortable as the Canon. Nikon was slightly cheaper though.

I also purchased a Tripod and 8gb SD card.

I can't wait until the battery has charged now so I can have a play. I think it will take me a while to get used to working it though!

Any tips for a newbie?

Chris

Hi Chris,

Welcome! As dumb as it may sound, while the battery is charging, go through the manual and try to figure out some of the settings. When you bored of that, if the battery is still charging, start asking questions!

Once the battery is charged, go and play, then come back and ask some more and show us some of the things you've been shooting. That way hopefully we can all help you improve too

Playing is a good way to get better. Learning from your mistakes helps too (I make plenty still)

I've only had my 450D since December and I love it. Still don't know what it's fully capable of doing. I can't learn it all at once!

I'm about to buy my first DSLR and I'm looking at the 2 you mentioned. I preferred the feel of the Canon too (the Nikon felt a bit cramped even for my tiny hands).

Please keep us (me!) updated as I'm very interested in how you get on.

Consider getting a copy of "Understanding Exposure" by Bryan Peterson
It's an excellent read.

I had the same decision to make myself a couple of months ago. As this was my 1st dslr as well, I chose the 1000D over the 450D for the same reason as you, I didn't think that I would need the higher spec & I saved £130 as well, which I can put towards a lens or flash if I want too.

Congrats on your new camera & I hope you enjoy yours as much as I enjoy using mine.
