I have been approached by a local musician to capture some images of up and coming bands in my local area. I have captured some nice pictures with my 70-200 2.8 in the larger venues but seem a little stuck to the back of the venue due to the focal length. I have a 35mm 1.8 which has been great but the 'focus with your feet' approach has left me running around trying to get the perfect shot.
The question I have for you is do I invest in either the nikon 14-24 2.8, the 24-70 2.8 or a decent 1.4 prime?
I will be looking to progress into a FX body in a few years time but at the moment my D90 will be my work horse.
Any tips will be gratefully received!

24-70 was my staple gig lens. I used the 70-200 once but it was just too long.

The 14-24 would be interesting, but I wonder in a pub setting, the wide angle would be less usefull. I can see the use at a big venue with a big stage for wide dramatic shots, but pubs tend to have crap in the way you dont to photograph, so it might not be all that usefull.

I also used an 85mm f/1.8, but again this was large hall venues from side or rear of stage.

I think 24-70 is the safest and best bet.

I agree with TCR4x4 - you will never, ever regret having the 24-70mm. Pin sharp and very versatile. Most would struggle to differentiate between it and a top-end prime lens from just looking at an image (which is what counts?).

The thing with pub venues is they are dark - often really dark.

My last gig in a pub I could not have used an F2.8 lens, it would have been too slow. I used exclusively a 35mm F2 and it was perfect for the job.

Only you can know if the venues will be lit well enough to use a 2.8 lens - and if so - the 24-70mm would be an excellent choice!

24-70 is my default starting point. Its is the lens I use most and always gets me out of the brown stuff. Tonight I will make love to it ...... again :)

Cheers for the advice peeps! I have ordered the lens today so should be snapping away happily this weekend! Will also be packing my trusty 35mm 1.8 just in case

I use my tamron 17-50mm f2.8 and 50mm f1.8 with my 7D, and often need to bump the ISO up a bit. The guys I usually work with don't mind the flash, so I can get away with low powered flash work and get some funky effects that way if I want to mix things up :)

Oh God... I hope you will not sell it to an unaware victim after all of this. and those poor 1D...
