psd file sizes

Don't know if I have only just noticed but my files sizes seem huge lately (about 100mb or so)

I use a 450D with CS2 and use Adobe bridge to use the raw files save as a dng file, open the dng and work on it, nothing too complex just a few layers

Is this normal?

Layers do tend to add quite a bit of bulk and 100mb is not unusual for a PSD. I was working on a TIFF file the other day ad noticed it was 256mb!

If you are keeping the raw files do yuo really need to keep the PSDs or can you not save as jpegs when you have finished and delete the PSDs?

Sounds pretty normal to me, I wouldn't call 100mb huge.

Just make sure you aren't needlessly duplicating layers as a lot of people do. For example if you're cloning something, don't copy the whole layer to work on, just create a blank layer and select sample current and below. Adds about half a very small thing in filesize and provides the exact same functionality.

I always keep the PSDs, the whole point being I can go back and tweak edits whenever I want.

FWIW, I just finished working on a 2.9 GB photo. I wouldn't want to do too many of those.

So what's the solution?

not unusual - I think I got one around 500mb the other day. Flatten the image when you've finished if its a real issue, that will reduce to a more manageable size
