PS5 or Xbox series X

I’ll get both eventually but will wait till the prices settle a bit, I hear Sony are in a bit of a tight spot atm with preorders not being able to be fulfilled. I’ve got both current gens and still working my way through quite a few games so there’s not a rush for me.

I can’t decide which one I’ll get. I do think that Game Pass is really good value what with a lot of AAA titles being on it from day one. I prefer the Sony exclusives though. I think I might try and hang on for a while, after new year, and see what the feedback is on the hardware - fan noise, reliability etc. I’ve enough on my PS4 to keep me amused for a while yet.

Saying that, gadget lust may win out. I’ve had three emails this evening from three separate shops saying more PS5 stock will be available to preorder tomorrow.

I'm happy with the gamepass for pc at the moment. So will wait for the rush to die off before getting a new xbox

We are going with Xbox our gaming friends are all on Xbox anyway

My son & son in law have both pre-ordered full fat PS-5s, not the digital versions. One of their friends pre-ordered his at 1am on launch day while he was 'working' night shift. They are a bunch of gaming geeks :)

anyone getting either or both, thoughts comments welcome
I‘ve got both at the moment, A One X and a PS4 Pro. I'm probably going to get a series x first but I can't find either at the moment for love nor money!

Neither - i realised the amount of time i wasted sat in front a TV playing COD or Gran Tourismo. There were times I could go out and enjoy the outdoors but instead was wiggling thumbs on controller

Me too,ive not had a console for 3 years i think it is.i was addicted to combat flight sims on the PC for years lol, still fancy playing again though :)

Gran tourismo 3 A spec on the PS2 was a serious addiction. I would burn hours getting car set ups then racing. It was the perfect balance between difficult and enjoyment. The latest versions are either too easy or not real world. You used to qualify based on you driving not what your car was capable of making up places and having to nail every single apex perfectly. The latest GT online can have some one spank you off the track but if you lean on someone you get penalized. COD with the estate map was awesome I played for about 8 hours one night with a group where we kept playing the same map and would hold the house, if some one died and respourned outside the group would give cover fire to get you back inside. 6 months later no one spoke to each other anymore because so many people were abusive and had they spoken to people they way they did online they would be eating via a tube. and then they made it so that those that could mash buttons the most did best, The 4th COD were realistic once you got to Black Ops jumping or running and shooting at the same time became the way to score kills and i lost enjoyment. im not a massive gamer but enjoy playing when you have a chance. I will never be able to afford to race properly but i do miss competing

I've never felt that gaming is a waste of time, obviously so long as it's in moderation. For me (and perhaps others) it's more about giving my brain some downtime from reality. I suppose it's similar to watching films, which I also love. It's just some escapism into a world of fiction. Incidentally, one thing I have noticed from the many women I know is that they don't seem to get the whole gaming thing, but like reading fictional books it's much the same I guess.

I was thinking about it, but I also rather interested in VR and quite fancy the Oculus Quest 2 instead. Currently have an Xbox One S for my son.

I enjoy character driven narrative games, really is an escape for me.

Yep agree though gaming is definitely not just a guy thing

The 70 quid price tag on a lot of the software is a bit worrying. Just makes Gamepass even more appealing though.

Reviews of the Series X hardware appearing online now.
That's quite pricey.
I will definitely get the game pass. With the included EA content FoC it's a no brainer

Aye we've got gamepass but the games availability do expire. CEX etc is handy though, got RDR2 and Division 2 for about £20 each I think it was.

So here's a question for you all.

Previously you could share a Microsoft account across two consoles that weren't the same e.g. Xbox one and xbox 360.
Do you think this will be an option with thegh series X and series S?
It would be great if I could use just the one account on both my console and my sons as it will save on two lots of game passes.

Oh yes that’s a very good question
My missus is going to get the new Xbox straight away but I’m not going to and we game share

If I am in a financial position to at the time, I will get a PS5 when Gran Turismo 7 appears. GT is virtually the only game I play now, and waited to get a PS4 until GT Sport appeared. I will be getting the disk version.

It is going to be interesting how these consoles compare, and what they can do once the developers get the experience of the new systems. Both company's seem to have designed these consoles with different focusing on features. After seeing the XBox Series X (terrible name) internals quite awhile ago, I can't wait to see what Sony have done inside their case. :)

I can't see the point of the XBox Series S (also a terrible name ), but will probably sell well because of the price.

is there any game data on discs these days or just a small patcher program that downloads an 80gig set of files on day 1!

Wasn’t the Xbox one going to be disc-less and download for games only until the backlash from retailers and gamers over second hand game sales Kicked off? I don’t tend to resell games but wouldn’t stump up £70 if it wasn’t an option....particularly as some games seem to come out half-baked and need patching later....

The form factor of the series x puts me off as there is nowhere on the tv stand to take it neatly/safely away from the cats...

I don't mind having a disc drive as it means the xbox becomes my 4K bluray player too but games wise I can't remember the last time I actually bought a game on disc, usually they are all digital downloads.

Well if you'd struggle with the size of the Series X, your gonna have fun with the PS5

I’m coming around to the idea of the Series ‘S’ console. Cheaper and a lot smaller. I don’t buy games on release, I either wait for a sale or for them to be PS Plus/Games With Gold freebies or to be added to Game Pass if it’s a game I especially want. Other than that, I’ll just choose from what ever is on Game Pass if I want something new to play.

As far as I can see, it’s just a lack of optical drive and a resolution hit over the ‘X’.

I really do want to play that Demon’s Souls remaster for PS5 though. Easily my favourite PS3 game.

I think it could be more than just resolution, there are other aspects to the quality of these consoles, such as HDR, draw distances etc. For me it is not a next gen console if it can't play the next gen games as they were designed.

The way both companies have made consoles in the past, they brought out a console, and then added more powerful editions after few years to give a mid generation boost to sales, and/or bring out smaller versions of the consoles that have the same capability, but cheaper to produce and sell. To knee cap a console straight from the off doesn't seem right regardless of how cheap it is. If I'm going next gen and potentially paying £70 for games, :$ I want to see all those improvements over the last gen on the screen. Just my opinion of course. ;)

Bit of a double edged sword the whole discs things. Great to be able to buy used games, but a slight pain having to remember to stick the disc in each time you want to play. Would be good if the disc was just for the install.

Disc-ed and disc-less have pro's and con's, but disc-less and not as powerful is a bit weird to me.

Maybe once the game has installed onto the internal memory the disc may not be needed. It would need some way of registering that disc to that install of the game though to stop someone buying one game, and then distributing it to others, and I don't know whether that is possible.

If that is not the case then all these 'influencers' who have been given the XBox Series X over the last week or so to show off should make it clear that they are flipping between digital download versions of the games.

As a pc gamer I’ve been digital download only for some time. Given some of the sizes of the patches (140gb) call of duty!! Having an disc makes little sense as you’ll have to download huge patches for each game anyway!

i was lucky enough to get the xbox series x pre ordered for release date. am thinking of cancelling it though. feeling a little underwhelmed by it all. i know theres going to be an improvement in frame rate pretty much across the back catalogue and some more consistent resolution - but thats not really screaming "next gen"at me. I know the load times are improved too, but with no major next generation releases at launch its feeling like a tough one to justify to be handing over the cash. currently already have xbox one x.

I think I’ll hang fire until next year sometime and get a PS5 then. The only game that really interests me on release is the Demon’s Souls remaster but at 70 quid for the game on top of the cost of the PS5, it’s hard to justify just to play that. Sony has always had, for me, the strongest software catalogue so I’ll wait until more of the exclusives start appearing. Microsoft are doing a lot right with backward compatibility, Gamepass and the two-tier console hardware but it’s all about games and Halo and Forza have never interested me.

Tbh, watching the teardown video for the PS5, I’m not even sure it’ll fit in my tv stand. The thing looks to be the size of a small car. o_O

I thought the PS5 teardown was interesting. Each manufacturer has gone different ways with their designs. The PS5 looks a big boy, :$ unless the chap doing the teardown was small. ;)

The PS5 has one circuit board with the components on, compared to the two used in the XBox SX, emphasizing the different design routes each manufacturer has gone. The PS5 is using the niche, but more efficient, Liquid Metal thermal paste too. Whatever is takes I think to keep the heat and noise down. ;)

I was surprised that the side panels seemed so easy to remove, but given one side hides access to the SSD slot underneath, rather than a slot in the body like the XBoxSX, it couldn't be too difficult to remove, but no screws was a plus. It does open a market for custom side panels, either from Sony or someone else. So there would probably be custom panels for Gran Turismo 7 when it appears, to go with my GT PS4. ;)

They both use quite large single fans, though totally different types of fan. Sony have given some thought to the problem dust, with a couple of holes working as dust catchers beneath the fan. It will be interesting to see if that works, especially compared to the seemingly no way to easily clean dust from from the XBox machines other than the usual vacuum from slots on the outer of the body. Having the side panels so easy to remove aids easy access to these dust catching slots for cleaning.

I've seen some people saying that the disc drive looked like an add on after the fact, but I think from the way is looked in the teardown that maybe the enclosed Blu-ray disc drive, and maybe 2-3 plastic parts are the difference between the versions to manufacture, and must have been designed like that from the start. The two XBox designs being totally different in components and design must have a cost, not least for different production lines, though maybe that is offset by cheaper component costs.

There seemed to be compatibility for lots of different physically sized NVME SSD drives, though there will be few available to take advantage of the fastest performance at launch, and we are not really sure what impact using a slower SSD drive will have. I watched a Digital Foundry video on YT earlier comparing different SSD's and a HDD with the XBox SX, and they had variable impact on performance, with the HDD being extremely slow (unsurprisingly) in most uses.

The base stand of the PS5 looked very well designed, with a slot for the screw in the base once removed to place the base on the side, to use the PS5 horizontally. And there is even a piece of plastic/rubber to cover the screw slot.

Will likely get a series x when I can get my hands on one.

The biggest issue for most will be if they can actually push 4K 120fps out of these machines.
At the moment very few TVs have hdmi 2.1
Your really only looking at the newest LG oled tv’s.
I’m fine dropping mine to 1440p if I need to as I mainly play online shooters and generally the are not all polished like the main games.

Sadly they won’t be able to push 4K/60 fps let alone 4K/120 unless it’s some e-sport game. The latest Nvidia RTX 3080 and 3090 gpu’’s are significantly more powerful than a PS5 and yet the 3080 just manages 4K/60 in most games but not all. The 3090 manages 4K/60 in all current games bar a handful.

These consoles will either output to 1080p and upscale it to 4K or reduce quality (often called ‘optimising’) to the point where they can hit native 4K/60. The gpu’s in the consoles are no more powerful than what’s been available in the pc market since 2016 so ‘next gen’ Is stretching it.

I'm going to wait for the price to drop and any bugs ironed out.
I upgraded to an Xbox One X in April and I'm going to get my monies worth of use.
I previously owned an Xbox 360 and a PS3 but I gave the PS4 a miss.
If I remember correctly, upon release the PS4 didn't support DLNA, I hope Sony don't bork it this time.
I've read that both Miscrosoft and Sony won't be able to supply enough units to cover the pre orders.
