Hello all

I am currently saving up for for PS CS4 or CS5 depending on how long it takes to save and wondered where any of you CS4 users purchased yours from?

I am very nervous about buying it from anyone other than Amazon or Adobe themselves as I have read many horror stories by people buying PS products that turn out not to be the real thing.

If anyone has any positive experiences using UK companies that may be a bit cheaper than Amazon and Adobe and would like to share? That would be very kind

Not bothered about the Extended version or Student versions as I would like something that I can upgrade in the future.

Thanks people,
Simon.

Going by the numbers of people who appear to have a copy of CS4 and the amount of those who don't have the faintest bloody idea how to use it, I'd say the chances are most people didn't pay for it.

The thing about Adobe software is you don't get a good discount on it unless you're buying in ridiculous volumes or through some form of education discount. Anything else is either a compete con or some form of elaborate tax dodge that will no doubt see you losing out on official Adobe support - assuming that's a big deal.

There's always the old 'sign up to an Open University course and get the student discount' route though. T189 being the most appropriate road to go down for a photographer.

I've not got Photoshop (too pricey and Lightroom does everything I need) but I always buy my software from Adobe, they've got a fair few special offers on at the moment, or at least they seem to be emailing me about them a lot.

FWIW I prefer downloading the trial and sending off for the box to get the serial number, when you are spending that much money it makes sense to have spmething physical to show for it!

Hi All, thanks for the information.

I was (perhaps wrongly) under the impression that the student license was a one product deal and could not be updated/upgraded to the next 'full' product. This is why I initially dismissed the idea as I would want something that I can upgrade for years to come.

So if I purchased a CS4 student license, could I pay the £180 ish and upgrade to CS5/6, or do Adobe charge more when upgrading a student license?

Cheers,
Simon.

Sorry, I completely missed that part of the OP. You can upgrade software bought on an education licence.

You pay whatever the price is for the upgrade path.

The only thing you're not supposed to do is use any software bought on an education licence for commercial gain. Yeah, good luck with that one, Adobe. Why not cut them some slack seeing as they've actually paid you some money unlike the rest of the thieving buggers out there.

I didn't pay for mine but I have a full license to use it with work.

Think they went via Adobe direct aswell

I create packages to deploy Adobe CS apps across networks for clients, who all have site licenses.

So it's pretty easy to get my hands on, and for legitimate purposes. Have to admit, I'm still getting to grips with CS3, so I'm not using CS4 yet.

The majority of people on here won't even get close to exploiting CS2/3, let alone CS4. But we obviously mustn't forget having the top kit makes you better at everything!

Well, if you have spare funds to burn and you're equally rubbish with both... why not? :D

Of course if anyone does have a lot of spare cash, and needs something to do with it, my lens fund is always grateful for contributions :naughty:

Thats the trouble with Adobe - they add a few things that are genuinely useful when they release a new version but a whole lot of stuff that really doesn't matter to anyone. I challenge anyone to say they have CS4 and regularly use more than 50% of what it offers.

The only reason I got CS4 is because I had been using version 8 for ages and I just wanted the latest.

But I am going to try Gimp. From what I've been told it's well worth a look. It is faster and apparently does the things PS does and is also compatible with PS plug-ins.

Thanks everybody for your comments

The OU course is looking favourite for a student license of CS 'something' with the course itself being a bonus. Does anyone know what the OU course allows you to legitimately purchase as a student license, as the Creative Suites look tempting :naughty:

It's not a matter of wanting CS4 to make me 'better' at post processing, it's getting on the CS 'ladder' and it's something that I really fancy particularly with the tight Lightroom 2 integration, which I use extensively. Also, as you can skip a few versions before upgrading again makes £180 or so every three years for an upgrade do-able. I'm sure CS2/3 are not far off what CS4 can do but you cannot easily source new copies of this software anymore so that is not really an argument.

for most people the £60 alternatives will do very nicely.
it depends what the OP needs it for...

I've already got PS Elements 6 with my Wacom tablet. I suppose it's down to personal choice and having the option of using the differentiating features of CS4 to your advantage plus the fact that I really want to be a Photoshop tart :woot:

Cheers,
Simon.

As I already said, try T189.

It's not the cheapest OU course but it's pretty close and you get the added benefit of it possibly proving useful to you as a photographer.

Or there's always T183 or TT280 if that's more your sort of thing.

I can't adjust my 5Dmk2 RAW files with CS3 so had to get CS4. its got nothing to do with having the new version.

If you seriously went out and spent your own money on a retail copy of CS4 solely for that purpose, can I have some of the spare cash you seem to have lying around?!

If anyone can hook me up with a full version that would be appreciated. ;)
