I want to try and keep my lenses in as good condition as possible, does the congregation recommend Neutral Colour filters, or any other tips that they would like to share?

Just use a UV filter most of the time, a CPL (Polarizer) when needed (sunny shots, casr shoots) and then I'd look at getting ND filters if you need those in the future.

For protection a decent UV is fine, Hoya etc.

I want to do some portrait shoots, would a diffuser filter be recommended?

Some of Canon's L series are only designated water resistant when you add a filter e.g. 24-70F2.8
You can get Hoya Pro 1 Protector filters, cheaper than UV and do just that and only that (so the blurb goes).

All my lenses have filters on, all the time, it's a personal choice thing and a hotbed of contention :D

Personally, I'd consider using a UV filter, as said, for harsh conditions. But for day to day, the lens hood suffices for general use. Please though, let's not let this thread turn into a rant about whether they affect image quality or not. We all have our opinions, let just hope they get left at the door on that specific point :D

I am thinking I certainly want to protect the lens, so a UV will be a no brainer, as they are pretty cheap I may pick up a CPL and a diffuser to see if the make much difference and then come back to the idea if I think I can work with them
