Hi Guys,

Still quite new over here but have been so impressed with the overall site so am looking forward to getting more involved and thought what better way than to get involved in this project?

First time (as I have noticed it is for plenty of others) doing this sort of thing, so feel like I'm in good company!

OK, so for my 1st image - I thought of the obvious things for "Curved", but my personal aim for this project is to start thinking outside the box with my photography and learn new things. Then I remembered going to a club in the far east once that was called something like "curves/curve" or something to that tune (I realise it sounds like a strip club, but it wasn't :D ), but all I remember was that the club had a neon sign outside. I have therefore tried replicating this through painting with light - something that I've never tried before!

Props used:
Nikon 50mm 1.8
2 x Small LED torches
Random selection of coloured plastic wraps from a tin of quality street (I obviously had to eat the chococlates first )
A willing assistant (the wife!)

I always like a bit of light painting (and am privileged that Michael Bosanko is on this site too!) - so that's a great interpretation on the theme.

Shame the bottom of the 'c' is slightly clipped - but it still works well

Great first entry to your 52  Well impressed.
I must look into how to do this painting with light.
I love the results it produces!
Good luck with the rest of your challenge!

Cracking effort , had a light painting idea at first but never tried it before so might get some practice in for later on this year.

Looks great but you've cropped the D out of curved  ;)

Thanks for all the comments guys - much appreciated. Glad that I wasn't completely off the line with the theme.
Take on board the comments about the cropped off 'C' - will try and get the full thing in next time. Must say, light painting is something I could get in to and dedicate a bit more time to developing my skills for. Didn't realise the great Michael Bosanko was a member of this forum - really enjoy his work and a true inspiration.

Looking forward to next week's theme already!

Cracking shot, wonderful colour, really liking the painting with light type photo's at the min, really need to get out there and try it myself sometime.

Well done mate.. definately fits the theme, i'm sure at least one of my 52's pics is gonna involve a bit of light painting.

Rav

 it's great to see so many new people getting involved here!

That's a great start to your 52. Won't get into the cropped "c" because that's all already been said, but other than that it's one of the nicest light paintings I've seen
Lovely colours and great random curvy background shapes. It's really got that neon Club sign feel to it so spot on with what you set out to achieve.

Good idea, I'm going to have to do some thinking in the coming weeks.
I know how to do light painting in one colour but how do you get it in different colours? Great shot.

Thanks guys - really appreciate all the C&C and feedback. I am trying to comment on others work (but I am making an effort to comment on threads that have been bumped to 2nd/3rd/4th pages as everyone comments on the threads on Page 1.......)

I know how to do light painting in one colour but how do you get it in different colours? Great shot.
kim

I used 2 small LED torches and covered each one with a different coloured transparent cellophane wrapper from a tin of Quality street. I took a few shots, each time covering the LED torches with different coloured wrappers and then combined the images in Photoshop - simples! :D

That's brilliant !!
Pity about the crop (bottom left).

All the same, what a way to start.

Liking this, the colours are amazing, great start towards your 52. must try this sometime looks great fun

That's a great effort, nice and sharp and colourful. I've failed miserably at these in the past so well done for nailing it

Very well done, I've not tried this as such, and I can imagine how hard it is.

Wow! That is great Pradipta. Not sure how it's done but I must have a bash at it.....

Cheers, Rob

Well well well.......Wk2 and still here! :D
I suspect that like a few others, I really did think I'd already hit the wall since Simon released the theme for this week last Saturday - Poetry!
I really struggled with this and thought of various things - feather pens, ink pots, poetry books.....just name it! But nothing felt right.

I really wanted to follow the theme and represent a favourite poem. My all time favourite poem is "The Tiger" (which goes "Tiger tiger burning bright, in the forests of the night....") by William Blake. Now, living in England, and with the recent weather we've had, I had little chance of finding a tiger in a forest (!), so I had to come up with something else! I then saw my wife knitting a caterpillar for our little nephew and that was it! The result is below.

What Did I Learn?

I learned that taking a picture to a theme is b****y difficult, but I thoroughly enjoyed the thought process and the key thing is that I had fun doing the whole thing. The picture below is by no means the best picture I have taken, but it's personal and I love the end result.

Now I can look at other's images and start commenting and see how I could have done better....

Thanks for looking and reading my blurb above! Look forward to your comments - good or bad!

Hehe, that's too of us who contemplated Tiger Tiger, looked at the snow, and went elsewhere :D

I love the curved shot, for me the cropped C doesn't actually distract from the shot, gives it an "on the go" sorta feel.

I like how you've framed the caterpillar and the DoF suits the shot, plus the poem is quite cute.

What a lovely looking chap :D
Lovely colours and lighting and the poem is just how I like them - short ;)

Lovely colours, a well taken shot. it works well with the poem, although I found it hard to read the poem (the colours) probably just my eyes...

Missed your curved shot last week - it's great I love it...I don't think that the cropped 'C' is much of an issue.

Colours, composition and DOF are all spot on in week 2 - the only thing I can't make my mind up about is the yellow border.

2 brill shots, well done

I'm glad that you enjoyed it despite the challenge! That's what this is all about.

Definitely one worth viewing large - the text is a bit difficult to read on the smaller size.
About as far away from a tiger as you could get, but it's fun, vibrant and VERY appealing. I love it
Choice of background works perfectly and really effective use of DOF. I'd like to see just a touch more foreground underneath his chin - it's cropped a little bit tight for me - but it still works very well.

p.s. your wife is very talented to have made this too

Thank you for the comments everyone. Much appreciated.
I am now slightly starting to panick about this week's image. Have been out of the country for over a week and returned late last night and now have a pretty bad jet lag, so my brain simply isn't working! Might have to be a JOKER week, but that would be dissapointing in my 3rd week.
By the way, what are the "rules" for JOKERS??

Sarah - thank you for your comment - I shall pass it on to the wife and I knwo she'll be very pleased as she has only been knitting for a few months!

Hi, just before the deadline! With limited time to complete this week's project, I wasn't expecting to come up with much this week and wanted to keep it really simple.
However, having shot my 1st idea, I wasn't sure how well it fits the theme, so I tried something else, and now I'm not sure which one should be my final image for Wk3, so I really need your help guys and gals!

Here it goes.....

Image 1: More sliced than chopped??

4300501882_61178933c5_o.jpg

OR Image 2?

4300699902_ce225b76c5_o.jpg

Had fun taking both shots, but I'm really hoping that for next week's theme, I can venture outside rather than staying indoors (which I have done for the 1st 3 weeks!)

Sliced or chopped you can smell and taste those lemons. Nicely coloured and set up.

lemons for me
love the colours and the lighting!

I guess that some sort of fizzy water/lemonade?

Good couple of shot.

I like the first one in terms of it being a better image but the second one is a great twist on the theme and certainly not one I thought of.

Well done,

Dan

Overall I prefer the 2nd image as it has some narrative and a nice twist on the theme.

I found the lemon shot lacked a bit of sharpness (no pun intended!)

Not quite sure how I missed this thread.

week 1 - very well done. Nice take on the theme

Week 2 - I love this. Colours, DOF and poem all spot on

week 3 - I have to agree with Ian on this. The lemons seem a little soft although the colour is fantastic. I prefer the credit cards shot as it is away from the norm and an image nobody else has come up with.

Looking forward to seeing your next images.

Hi Pradipta,

I hope you're getting over your jet lag - and despite that you've come up with two very interesting shots.

I'm finding it difficult to choose between these two. The lemon shot has more impact in terms of colour and vibrance, but I'm really drawn to shot no.2 for the story behind it. It's a really unique take on the theme and I think it's technically the stronger of the two . . . but it doesn't quite have the visual punch of the first one
A really tough choice.

I actually don't think that viewing the credit cards on the white forum background is helping. . . maybe a black border around the image would give it that extra bit of impact and make it stand out as the stronger shot.

Tough one, they both work... I think the lemons win it, making them wet has really helped.

A VERY BIG :thankyou: to all of you who have taken the time to comment on my images so far. Wish I had the time and patience to respond to each comment, but I really do appreciate your comments and feedback.

So, after all the comments, I think I will choose the chopped credit cards as my image for Wk 3 as although I do like the image of the lemons, I feel that credit cards image fits the theme better for Wk3 and as some have said, a bit unique too. Here's to week 4..........
