This will be a repeat of the one that we did last year.

As per the title, Lencarta will be hosting this workshop at "Lencarta Towers" in Bradford, for the benefit of TP members.
It will start at 10 a.m. and finish when it finishes, not later than about 5 p.m.

It will take the form of me setting up and photographing various types of products.
Attendees are invited (encouraged) to bring something along to light and photograph - it can be any kind of product/still life subject, and the more variety we have, the more challenges we can overcome.

As I don't know how many people will be attending and how many, or how complex, the various subjects will be, I can't guarantee that we will be able to cover every subject, but I can guarantee that we will cover as wide a range as possible.

This will be as hands-on as possible. If you bring something along to photograph then you should also bring a camera so that you can get a shot of it on your own camera, but generally it will be me who does the photography, we'll get more done that way.

I'm not sure how many people we can accommodate but I'm thinking at least 15.

Still life/product photography is, IMO the most technically challenging genre there is. It's easy to take a photo that shows what something looks like, but much more complex to produce a shot that shows the unique benefits of that product. And it isn't something that people find easy to learn on courses, and pretty much all of the online tutorials and videos I've seen are worse than useless...

So there you go, it's an opportunity to learn how to improve your lighting. And of course the lighting and compositional principles are universal, they don't apply only to still life shots. All I need right now is an expression of interest, we can sort out details later.

One small problem that needs to be mentioned - I will need everyone to arrive on time and at the same time, because for obvious reasons we have security here and we need to open the security gates for people just once, if possible.

BTW, it's free.

I'm Sorry I'll be missing this as I have a wedding.
But I would urge anyone with an interest in photography to go along. Lighting isn't just about studio lights and kit, there's important stuff for anyone who owns a camera.

I would love to of come , but it's 4hr drive :-( and my first week back at work after two weeks off

Sounds like a good idea but I would definitely need to get up early to make this from West Oxfordshire.

Book into a Travelodge half way up, have a shoot in the Peak District the day before

Garry,

I have no weddings or fear of travelling any distance, so I would like to go on the list!

Gutted, I'm on holiday that week, would have loved to have attended.

Well, unfortunately any dates at this time of year are going to clash with holidays - but my own choice of dates is limited so there isn't much that I can do.

I am though hoping to put another of these lighting days on in a few weeks time, just need to check my own availability, model etc

Think I could risk a journey over The Pennines. Haven't checked my passport but I think my visa has expired. I may be apprehended at Birch Services Frontier Station.!!!

I'm a Welshman not a Yorkshireman so we'll accept you:) Is this a firm booking?

Yes, put me down please. I strugle with product lighting so any help is welcome.

You will be ok on that day. The guards are on a course on how to identify Welshmen sneaking over the border. ;)

Thought there might have been more but I trust this is still going ahead Garry? Looking forward to seeing you in Bradford in a weeks time.

I though there might be more too, but I arranged it for a Friday, in the past I've put them on on a Sunday - which is easier for other people but not for me.

Not to worry, I think there will be 3 more people from elsewhere and it's still worth putting on even if, for the first time ever, it doesn't fill up.

One person has now had to drop out, we are left with only @mickledore, @Mr Perceptive and @Speedyflash from Talk Photography.
Assuming that nobody else drops out it will still go ahead.

We start at 10 a.m. sharp on Friday (14th August) and the venue is
Lencarta Ltd
Unit 3A Mohair Mills
Gibson Street,
Bradford BD3 9TR.

When you enter Gibson Street, turn left and drive as far as you can go.
You'll get to double gates that may or may not be open - if they are closed, just beep twice on the horn.
Drive in, turn sharp left and park. Our building is opposite where you'll be parked and the entrance is at the front.
We will stop for lunch, for just a few minutes, at 1 p.m.
Please bring something - anything - along to photograph. I don't care what it is, we'll manage to light it. The whole idea is that you specifically learn how to light/photograph the item(s) that you bring along. Last year, we had everything from shoes to food to a trombone, and even a crash helmet - all great subjects to learn on.

Hi Garry

I'm really sorry but I'm not going to be able to come and will have to cancel, My wife had extensive spinal surgery only a couple of weeks ago and I thought she was ok to be left, but I now realise that I can't do that as she is still in a great deal of pain and barely mobile. I've tried to arrange for someone to come over and be with her for a couple of days while I'm away but can't find anyone.
I'm absolutely gutted as I was so looking forward to learning about the finer details of this type of photography as well as meeting you and getting to play with some proper studio kit. Please accept my sincerre apologies for pulling out at this late hour but unfortunately on this occasion I really don't have any choice. I hope that I will be able to attend another one of your photo days in the future.

Jules

With regret, in the circumstances, I am now cancelling this lighting workshop.
I (and Lencarta) hold these occasional free workshops so that we can improve knowledge and understanding of lighting, I think it's a a reasonable thing to do - I've spent most of my life earning a good living from creating light, and Lencarta makes its money from selling lighting equipment, so it's really only fair to give something back - but I don't think it's reasonable for me to spend a day of my time doing this unless a reasonable number of people are going to benefit from it.

Fully understand your thinking Gary. Thanks for the thought and sorry it won't be going ahead.

I couldn't make this date due to work commitments and others on holiday but I'd be interested in attending if I can work around the date. Enjoyed the last one I attended and learnt a lot so definitely worth attending for those looking to learn and improve (y)

Normally, these lighting workshops are full and I normally have to turn some people away - just bad timing and bad luck I suppose.

I'm still keen to do it and will arrange another date when I can, outside of the holiday season, but I can't do that yet because of personal reasons - I have a daughter who will be visiting from Australia next month, she's avoiding God's own county and staying in Dover, so I will need to take some time off for that visit and then catch up.

If I possibly can, I will schedule it for a Sunday, but this will depend on finding a Sunday when I'm not in a clay pigeon shooting competition, which is how I waste my weekends:)
Anyone who wants to express interest and who doesn't visit this forum frequently might be better emailing me at support (at) lencarta dot com, with the subject title PRODUCT LIGHTING WORKSHOP, I will then reply once a date has been arranged.

I would love to have come, but due to family illness there was no point in my even applying. Maybe next time. Its very good of you to run them at all.

Morning Garry, I would be up for attending when you come up with a date as I enjoyed the last one I came to.

We have just bought a couple of internet businesses that require lots of product shots so this will come in very handy.

Thanks.
