Edit My Images

Hi All

I run an internet business selling hand-finished, personalised guest books, photo albums and memory boxes. We will soon be launching our brand new web site and I want all new images of all of our products.

The problem is, I want to be able to display every product in every colour scheme available, (which is a lot of images!) so therefore, we will have to do the photography ourselves. Also, we add new designs and products all of the time and need a quick, easy and inexpensive way to add new images.

My question is what is the best DSLR camera for this purpose? I'm looking to spend £500-£800 on the camera and will also need to buy a light tent and lighting.

I have done all of the photography on our current site but want much better images for the new one. I know they won't be anywhere near as good as professional images but expense is an issue at this point.

Would be very grateful or any advise.

Thanks

Hi Joll and welcome to TP.

I think you'll find that it doesn't really matter which DSLR you use. Any DSLR will be up to the task you've described.

A couple of observations:
* If your target resolution is for a website then the pixel count doesn't matter. Even 6MP would be more than enough.
* You'll want to stop down the lens to get decent depth of field, which means youdon't need an expensive lens. Even the cheapest kit lenses are adequately sharp at f/8.

I think the key issues for you are going to be the lighting and the processing. For this type of photography, I'd suggest that the difference between professional-looking images and amateur-looking images is in the technique, not the equipment.

totally completely.....thread/end

and.....budget for a tripod, shutter release cable, flash is useful if not essential.
there's am awful lot of equipment not directly camera related you might decide you need that a light tent size budget won't cover.

For the top of your budget you get a pro to shoot and get the job done properly - have you costed this with a pro photographer?

I think he's already answered your question.

yep - but he won't sell any product with crap photos.

You would be surprised what some sites get away with and still turn over a reasonable amount of money, though better photos give a more professional look and will bring people with more money along (Hopefully)
