Hi all,

Below are two photos (you can click on them for full-size versions) of pretty much the same scene taken a couple of minutes apart with more or less the same settings (f/5.6, 1/1000s, ISO 720 vs f/5.6, 1/800s, ISO 800).

The first photo seems to have a sort of haze over it. It looks to me like the problem was caused by the sun being out for the first photo. What was the actual problem, though? Was it the sunlight illuminating all the small particles in the air?

But more importantly, is there anything I could have done when taking the first photo to get a better picture? Or did I just need to wait for the sun to go behind a cloud? And can I foresee that this problem will occur before taking a photo?

Thanks
Ian

I would say the haze has been cause by the smoke rather than the sun. If you look at the edges/corners, they seem to be fine. If you look at the branches in the top right, you can see the haze between two trees.

It just one of the issues with timing and luck of which way the wind is blowing.

In the first shot it looks like the engine is moving away from the camera and leaving a trail of smoke - that's would have caused the problem.

Hmm, it looked to me like the effect was too widespread to be caused by steam/smoke from the loco, but perhaps I was wrong. I'll keep an eye out and see if it happens again in different circumstances.

Thanks for the replies
Ian

Hi Ian
I agreee with Dougie. The haze is caused by residual smoke.
