Hi All,

Last month I decided to purchase a refurbished Canon 50d from the Canon eBay outlet. Paid for the item on the 5th May and it arrived 5 days later on the 10th May via courier. Opened up the box and got the camera out (brand new, very impressed) put the battery in it and had a play with it (worked fantastically) then the battery ran out. So got the charger out and plugged it in, no lights on the charger  Went into the manual definately should have a flashing red light when charging. Got my 350d charger and swapped the cable to make sure not a duff fuse in the plug they had sent me and the cable worked fine with my 350d charger. So 2 working cables 50d charger not working, tried both cables on 50d charger and still not working.

Time to contact Contact Canon Outlet, e-mailed them explaining the situation sat back and waited for a reply, nothing in reply for 2 days then found a phone number on the invoice sent with the camera. International number to Ireland, phoned and got a Human being and explained to him the problem (and explained I hadn't received a reply to my email) and he said absolutely fine we will get a replacement charger out to you, took the part number and serial of the faulty charger and said it will take up to 7 days for the replacement to arrive I said ok fine I will wait for it.

The following day I receive a reply to my email stating that they were sorry that the charger was faulty and I need to send everything back to them to get a refund. :bang: I then phoned again and explained to a different human being that I had phoned the previous day and spoke to someone and gave them the persons name and then had to explain the whole thing again. Second human being says, sorry it was actually me that sent that mail it's a template we use. :bonk: We are getting a replacement charger out to you. A week later and still nothing arrives.

So rather than email I decided to phone again (international call rate) and let them know that nothing has arrived. Got the same human being again and had to go through the whole thing again and explain the situation that it has now been nearly 2 weeks I have been waiting for this to be resolved and that it needs to be sorted out as I still have not been able to use the camera. Then put me on hold for 15 mins to speak to someone in the warehouse to get the replacement sent out. The 1st time it had not been actioned apparently.:bang: Was advised it would take up to another 7-10 working days to arrive. I said i am not pleased with the time frame and said it needs to be sent via courier if the item is in stock which I was advised it was. They said they would speak to the warehouse and get the item sent. I said ok fine I will wait again (I am a patient kind of guy). Another 7 days passed and still nothing, so I decided for evidential purposes that all comms should now be through e-mail, anyway sent another e-mail saying this has now taken long enough and suggested they give me a partial refund so I can go out and purchase a charger myself. 3 days later I finally get a reply to the email saying please wait 7-10 working days for the replacement charger to arrive :bang::bang::bang:

I then sent another email back to them asking them for a date when the item was supposedly shipped out to me, another 2 days for a reply to say the
item was shipped out on the 24th May and sent via Royal Mail 1st class post and that I need to wait 7-10 working days for delivery. :bang::bang::bang::bang:

I have still received nothing and decided to send them 1 more mail on Wednesday 01/06/11 explaining that if a replacement does not arrive before the end of play on Monday 13/06/11 that I will have no option but to open a PayPal dispute requesting a partial refund to go and source a replacement myself.

I have still had no reply to the mail sent to them on Wednesday and still no replacement charger now not a happy bunny, my patience has now worn thin.

I have managed to get a mate to charge the battery on a universal charger so I can test the camera and the camera works fine. I don't really want to go through the process of sending it back because I am happy with it. I have priced up a new charger and it is £50 for the official canon version.

Does anyone have any advice on what they think I should do next?

Sorry just realised I have written an essay

To save anyone else the eye strain ;)

The problem is Royal Mail lose things and it's 14 working days before they consider it lost so Canon can't claim until then, if they send another one out and it turns up they'll consider the second one lost even though you'd send it back.

If it's stopping you using the camera I'd consider buying a 3rd party car charger off ebay until it's sorted out, at least you'll have something that's useful when it's sorted out.

£9 delivered

Honestly? Even allowing for Royal Mail problems I'd get a refund - if comms and service are that bad now, what will it be like if things go wrong in a few months time?

Cheers for the replies guys, I understand Royal Mail lose things, a mate of mine is delivery manager at my local sorting office and have spoken to him to make sure they have nothing waiting in case my postie did not leave a card but he has confirmed there are no parcels waiting for me.

I have received an email from them at 11.20 today in response to my email sent last Wednesday. see below.

So more waiting time, to get it sorted out. Pretty poor in all areas imo.

Have also just done some digging and found out that the Canon UK outlet on eBay is not actually run by Canon it is apparently run by a company called Digital River who are acting as an official canon reseller however the shop and descriptions are badged up as Canon. I wonder if Canon actually know how much damage is being done to their reputation by this company?

As the camera is a refurb, why not just send the charger to Canon at Elstree, surely you got some warranty with it ?

I sent my Refurb 1D3 back to Canon although it came from Cameraworld. They where happy to remap the sensor under the warranty and return it done at no charge.

Don't mess about with the outlet send the origional to canon, it would have been fixed or replaced by now.

Cheers for the reply Chris.

Yes got a 12 month Warranty with it I presumed that the warranty was with the Outlet. Who are Elstree?

I would definately raise a paypal dispute even if the charger does arrive. Why should you waste all that money calling Ireland and not get compensated for it.

Cheers for the reply Ziggy, I haven't yet had my phone bill through to see how much the calls I have had to make have cost me . So I am prepared for a big bill but just how much is yet unknown.

1st rule of the canon outlet is:

1. If you get anything faulty, go straight to canon rcc, send a note, and a copy of your invoice, they will sort it

2 Dont contact the canon outlet via email.

3 Ring there irish number, there not that bad on the phone.

4. There are cheap numbers to ring ireland, 1p a min , if you search on the net

Cheers for the reply Balbowa, I am gonna wait and see what comes of it this week and then if no joy will send the charger off to Canon at elstree.

When I first phoned the outlet they said they would send out a replacement I gave them the model number and serial number. I then said what is the address to send the faulty one back to? he said "don't worry about it just put it in the bin." Luckilly I have kept hold of it!

Initial port of call is with Canon Outlet, if the item is not as described/DOA
Then the warranty is with Canon Uk, who have dealt with the issues I have had very quickly.
Sorry to hear of your problem. If you want to keep the camera, there is nothing stopping you contacting Canon Uk about the dead charger.

It's a nightmare dealing with canon ebay outlet. I had problem with them just a few months ago with a 5D2.
I wouldn't buy anything else from them from now on except cheap calculators.

Cheers for the replies Strobemonkey and Coldpenguin.

I agree with that, I would not buy from them again. I have now opened a PayPal dispute and requested a partial refund for the cost of a new charger and to also cover the cost of the phonecalls I have made to Ireland to try and get it sorted out due to thier slow email responses. The cost of the calls to Ireland have amounted to over £10  I have still had no contact from them since the last email arrived asking me to be patient and wait until they investigate further.

It has now been going on since the 10th May 11 and it is now getting silly. I think I might also pen an email to Canon UK explaining what has happened and that Digital River who are running the Canon Outlet on eBay imo are damaging the Canon brand.

Another update.

Have been into my PayPal account and the dispute that I opened has now been closed and Canon eBay Outlet (Digital River) have issued me with a refund for the £65.00 as requested. Finally some closure. Can at least now sort a charger out.

I am pretty sure I will not be dealing with them again.
