Hi
I recently purchased a Canon 28-135 lens as I wanted a good all round lens to take on holiday without having to take different lenses. It was within my budget and reviews seemed ok. I purchased it from Jessops only a month ago. Since then when pointing the lens down it doesn't just creep it falls down and I have to hold the lens barrel when taking pics. Is this normal or is it a faulty lens. Please don't tell me I should have bought a more expensive one, some of us have very limited budgets! Thanks Tina

Hi Tina

The lens does suffer with creep, I remember mine would extend on its own if I held it facing down, but it was more of a gentle slide down.

If its only a month old, I'd pop back to jessops with it and check it next to another, for peace of mind if nothing else.

I really liked mine and if it wasn't for a long term saving to upgrade, I would still have it.

Mine does suffer from creep. If you gently point it down it will stay where it is but practically any further movement and it slide and naturally stop at about 100mm. It sounds like your is a bit worse than mine.

i have the older version of this lens and mine was the same, a friend of mine had this lens too and his was the same.

I recently stripped mine down to clean it of fungus that had started to grow in it. I deliberately didn't re lubricate it when re building the lens and this has stopped the creep.

I don't think the build quality is great on this lens (i can only comment on the older ones), they are very susceptible to dust and dirt ingress and this is the second one i've had that has grown fungus in it. The front element is quite heavy too which doesn't help the creep.

My friend did drop his though and it just about survived! Despite my criticism above it is my favourite all round zoom lens, i find it very sharp.

If it's still under warranty I would try it against another as someone has said previously, alas I think even if they swapped it for another one the new one would be the same.
