problem with sb-700 flash

i cant seem to use it in any other mode than manual.. if i put it in any other mode (TTL for example) it shows an exclamation mark and tells me to switch to manual.
I am a numpty when it comes to flashes (i dont really need one), so i'm probably doing something stupid. Any ideas?

for some reason it says its ok with TTL until i put it onto either of my cameras.. and then thats where the problem starts

Yup. Although im wondering if it's a battery problem as they don't last very long

Yup. No problem when it's off camera. Contacts are ok
