Problem with Canon 28-135 - Focussing and IS vibration

Over the weekend at RIAT i think my Canon 28-135 IS USM has developed an issue.

It first started when the lens would hunt when focusing and then never achieve it. After that, when it did achieve focus the IS system seemed to go mental causing a vibration. Turning the IS off stopped that from happening but still hunting to focus on a regular basis. I tried reseating the lens and cleaning contacts but didn't help.

This was attached to my 7D that had no problems with the 100-400 or 10-20 that i had attached during the rest of the day.

Anyone able to advise on this at all?
 
Maybe you could try it on another body, just to rule out an issue with the combo of newer 7D and older lens. But to be honest it sounds like that would only confirm an issue with the lens. Perhaps you should get it looked at, never had a problem like that with mine.
