Problem with 400D/380EX not flashing

Good evening!
Got my flash out for some evening shots and it doesn't flash! Changed the batteries, still no joy. The pop up flash works fine and the 380 will flash when you press the test button. When you focus on anything in P mode you just get a very slow speed as if the camera doesn't recognise there is a flash on.

Any thoughts?!

Hi Andrew,
Bless you but I have sorted it! The problem appeared to be bad contacts, when I cleaned them up flash started working ok. You would think that an electrician would have thought of that first wouldn't you!
I was in a bit of a panic as it is a friends wedding tommorow, I am not there as the no1 tog but back up.

Do you want to try my Sigma flash which may rule out if its the camera or the flash? Am about in Mulbarton all next week.
