Help needed with printing b&w images.Printer, (canon pixma pro 9000) produces images much darker then they appear on screen. Have tried calibration with no success. Any advice greatfully recieved.

Can you clarify by what you mean by calibration? Seems to me that the monitor is far too bright in order to get a print / screen match.

You have a number of options. Ideally the screen should be calibrated and profiled using a suitable device such as a Spyder , Huey or Eye One. You will also need to set the brightness to match the local environment ( posh name for the room your printer/ computer is in). This is normally in the range of 110-140 cd/M.

You don't say what software you are using to print. If it's Photoshop or similar you'll need to set it up to work with printer profiles. This may sound complicated but it isn't really.

If you can't do any of this then it's going to be a bit more difficult.

First of all check the printer software. I'm an Epson person so I can't be too specific. However there should be some sort of printer controls that will allow you to adjust the brightness of the print. This may be the way forward.

Alternatively you could reduce the brightness of your monitor, using the monitor controls to match the look of the print. Then all you need do is adjust the brightness within your photo software and you should get a reasonable match

This comes up on a regular basis.
Even with a calibrated monitor a lot of canon printers output darker than the screen, make sure you are running the correct paper profile firstly, then in the printer driver turn down the colour intensity, usually to about -5 to -8 see if that helps, also change the colour mode to linear tone.
If you are using cs2 or cs3 iirc there is a utility that you print 2 pages out that give various adjustments, you then match these to the screen and adjust the driver setting to match.

 Cheers for that, I'll need to try those tweaks on my IP 100

The 2 page test sheets as far as I am aware are only available on the canon 9000 & 9500 photoshop plugin, but the other options although not identical in every printer model are similar I believe.
