Printing - Looks OK on screen, looks horrible when printed

I have just bought my first ever printer. It is a Canon MP550.

I printed out my first couple of photos at the weekend, but they look awful compared to what's on my laptop screen. There seems to be a purple/brown hew all over the printed photos, particularly where the photo's have grey cloud in them.

I've heard people mention calibrating monitors and printers together; could this be my problem (I wouldn't know where to start with this).

Any pointers or help would be very much welcomed.

it also depends on how you print.

take us through how you are printing take some screen grabs of each section too.

what paper and program are you using?

To me it sounds very much like a monitor calibration issue, however as posted above it could be a profile issue or both, I have posted a link to a YouTube video. The video is very basic, but it covers the basic process which may help start you off in the correct direction!

Sounds like it could also be the usual Cyan Magenta Yellow inks addition to make grey tones, black tones... instead of just Black ink. Usually is the case with consumer printers which renders magenta/purple like grey tones (to a certain extent).
