How are people getting there printer calibrated. Buy there own hardware or using a services?

Cheapest option is to use a service. OK it may cost a few pounds but if you only ever use one or two papers then it's the cheapest option. Permajet for example offer a service for profiling their paper on your printer which is free. Alternativly for £35 you can get vouchers to have up too 5 profiles created. That's a real bargain price

I use Fotospeed who do a similar service to Permajet, although their downloadable profiles on their website are that good I haven't bothered with them for my current favourite paper.

Getting a custom profile done is worthwhile if you are unhappy with the results you are getting, especially for black and white.

I calibrate the monitors but use pure profiles for the printer. As we use dye sub printers we only need one profile per printer as the media size and type is fixed and OEM controlled.

don't forget that a single profile isn't good forever, inks change over time as do print heads. Regular calibration is a necessity for professional work. I use the X-Rite i1Pro2 to make my profiles and I update them every few months just to make sure there are no shifts.
