Hello,
Can anybody please advise me what kit I would
need to print my computer saved photos in the
form of greetings cards.
Is it just a printer (I do not have one) and card
that I can fold in half after printing.Or do I need some
software.
I know this may sound silly but just like everything
else re..photography I'm very new and just dont know.
Hope this is posted in the right place...
Rgds Steve.

you may be better with publisher type software, rather than photoshop, most publishing pruducts have templates for greeting cards .

two option i know of are ms publisher or the serif page plus

Cheers Steve

Thankyou, but I dont know anything about
the things you refered to......? told you I
was new at this....

a publisher program , is designed for doing leftets cards ect. check on the internet , they noral have a templete for producing greeting cards . ie you costomise the phto and text then it prints the card for you.

if i get chance i will produce a sample.
Cheers Steve.

Hallmark do a program which is very easy for beginners to master called Hallmark Card Studio Deluxe v11. On Amazon it's priced at £29.

Thankyou,
This I assume is software and I follow the instructions, which
will be interesting.
What about the paper type (card) and does my soon to be
accuired printer need to have any special functions.
Also if I just wanted to narrow the print image to half of
the available card,(without any text or boarders etc...) and
then fold in half and simply write a message, would I need any software?
I have printed one or two pics before but only to show
mates down the pub.I am told that Epsom do a nice line in
printers for around £50,any advice re printers?
Yours confused...Steve.

Hi Steve,
What OS have you got, and how have you printed the pictures in the past?

windows 2000,no printer and as said,on a previous printer
have printed saved shots on to a4 ,to show somebody...

Ok, I was trying to judge how you printed the shots previously. Most software on a computer which can print, can print an a5 image, onto an a4 sheet, or an a6 image onto an a5 sheet. Most printers can accept 'card' of some sort.
If all you are thinking of doing, is the above, then you will not need special software.

However, if you are looking at manipulating the images in anyway, then you will need an image editing software (Ok, you can do it in paint if you must), such as either photoshop, lightroom, or gimp as some popular examples. Gimp is open-source, and is very powerful, but, can be tricky to use.
Simple layouts can be generated and modified in image editing software.

However, if you are not manipulating the images, but need to modify layouts, such as add text in an arc, or add a title, then a publishing piece of software would be useful. 'Publisher' comes to mind.
At a pinch, you can use a word processor, i.e. microsoft word, or OpenOffice (the latter being open-source again). Using a word-processor is possible, but not exactly what they were designed for (simple layouts are easy enough, larg A4 leaflets, perhaps not).

Internal wording, a word-processor would be good enough for, IMO

I am open to ALL advice and very greatfull
and the things that are being mentioned are being
logged and stored but I just feel it may be a bridge
too far for me at this time.
Is it possible for me to print from my computer
via a printer to a card that I can then fold?
If so will I have to buy a printer that has within a
special facility to enable me to do that.
What printer would that be,what should I be
looking for?
Please understand I am not trying to be awkward,
simply trying to start at the bottom and work up.
Rgds Steve.

Yes, almost any inkjet printer available at the moment will be able to take card, which you can then fold in two.
If you want text on the inside, you would need to turn the card around once it has printed once. If you are only doing a small number of cards, you might as well do this manually, rather than get a printer which can do double sided.

What quality of print do you need on the outside? A picture that looks like a photograph, or something more similar to that of a hallmark card?

I am obviously not making myself clear...
I have taken and stored in my computer a large
number of images mostly via my d90,I would like
occasionally to print one or more of these images
onto a card and for the time being that is all,no
text, nothing, any sentiment I would add by hand.
The question of card type is open to perusal,
should it be matt, gloss or photograph quality, would
be a question,I should perhaps ask myself at the time.
As said I have printed photo quality prints on single
sheet 6x4 and still have some of that paper left,
however I would like to print as mentioned above.
Steve.

I have printed greeting cards on A4 size 185gsm (that is a measure of thickness) glossy photo paper.
I print the picture on the bottom half of the A4 paper & then fold the paper in two.
With this paper after a while it does begin to curl up, you can use thicker paper if needed. 210 gsm may be better. The fold also leaves a bit to be desired as it is hard to get a sharp crease.
I get my cheap paper from here http://www.inkcycle.co.uk/default.php?cPath=1314_1747
For a better result you can buy pre-scored A4 or A5 paper, just search for greeting paper half fold.
One supplier is here http://www.photopaperdirect.com/cat...eting-Cards/?gclid=CJal8-nGqqYCFcse4QodcAebYg although I have never used them.
