pringles tube extension tube

Hello, looking at a Pringles tube bodge extension tube.
Read a couple of guides (not rocket science) and they mention reverse mounting the lens.
Is that necessary?
I have a reverse mount ring for my manual 50mm for macro, thought the extension tube would be for normal orientation.

Sorry if this has been covered, the search is a bit iffy on my phone.

What benefit does reversing the lens give you over using extension tubes? You can buy cheap tubes on ebay for very little.

Reverse mounting the lens just moves the lens centre further away from the film or sensor. It is not necessary with an extension tube.
