Hi all

Right its about time for me to purchase a prime.

Im currently using a D60 so im after what in you opinion is going to be my best bet. I hear good things about the 50 and the 35mm but not quite sure which to go for.

your opinions on both please?

Also looking at a body upgrade soon. Been looking at the D90 and selling the D60 but i dont want to be spending ££££ thousands but need a nice upgrade on my current one. Any other Nikons you would recommend.

Sorry for maybe the same old post or dumb questions Nikon just seem to confuse me now with there huge model range.

Regards
Oli

A nice prime will add something to your photography, with the f1.8 apertures of a 50 or 35 opening up the world of nicer looking portraits and natural light shots in the evening where the 18-55mm would normally require the flash to help out.

I actually have both the 35mm and the 50mm primes! I love them both although the cheaper 50mm wont auto focus on the D60, i used to have a D60 too! The 35mm af-s is great value and will auto focus on the D60 but the 50mm is a bargain. i think I paid around £90 new.

Do you prefer one over the other? Im not sure if i really want auto focus as if im switching to a D90 soon i should not need the AF-S but im not sure as of yet.

also im looking at getting a polarized filter to go with my new nikon 70-300 if anyone can suggest where the cheapest place to get one is it would be a huge help.

will be looking at a 10 stopper but not until i have a wider lens

having a look at the prices of different lens options im after i think it got to be a no brainer to upgrade the body to D90 or similar. Comparing prices My Nikon AFS 70-300 i paid £300 new the standard AF is £89 hmmm and as i can get a D90 for around the £350-450 mark and sell my D60 its got to be the way forward.

...and as i can get a D90 for around the £350-450 mark and sell my D60 i...
Sounds like a plan :)

Also keep an eye on the older nikon lenses on ebay - should be able to pick up an af in the 30-50mm.... just depends on the f# you'd prefer.

Although I agree that having a body with a motor in does open up a large amount of lens options with the 70-300 you have listed above the AF-S is a completly different beast of a lens. Do some searching and you will see that the AF-S is a far better lens. The other one is £89 for a reason!!

If you are looking at spending that amount of money don't forget to look at the used D300 market. I upgraded from a D40 to a D300 and the difference is amazing.
