I'm hugely excited to have been given the go ahead to start a camera club in my school and am buying two cameras to get us going. Budget £100-140ish.

I was looking at FujiFilm S1500's. Mainly as they look a bit mor SLRish and might have a bit more kudos with the kids but I don't really know anything about them.

Any other suggestions? I'd like these cameras as I say to hold a bit of lust factor for the children.

Also going to need to source cheap memory and bags.

Thanks in advance!

Oh also... any ideas on how to organise each session also welcomed! Will only have 45 mins twice a week.

If you want the kids to be interested, then you need to get them using the camera. How many are there in the club? and what aims do you have?

I would look at second hand kit maybe, or if new, don't forget to go to a supplier who can bill showing your VAT, cos the school can claim that back.

All you need is a camera that will take decent pictures and is small enough for little hands, or can be mounted on a cheap tripod.

Thanks for replies.

Should have said the children will be my year 5 pupils so 9/10. Lots of them bringing own cameras so these would be in addition.

Will continue my search. I live right next to Warehouse Express so might pop in there. Had been counting on claiming back the VAT :)

My son is nearly 8 and has a fuji S1500, and he loves it, although he's still on Full Auto.:D
Gave him a go on my back-up slr (Canon 20D) and took some good images, but did find it a little awkward to handle.

Hardest and first thing to teach (IMHO) is pressing the shutter half way for focussing, before pressing the shutter fully. I remember when I first started I was a little heavy handed in the beginning.;) Once I found my son had got the gist of this, his interest grew because more of his photographs were in focus rather then a blur.

He was also fascinated when I showed him some basic PS techniques on his pics. Perhaps PP will be part of your club, so you need to think about getting Gimp or something downloaded on the schools computers perhaps?

Good luck, wouldn't mind doing something similar myself, but too busy running a Pub.

Thanks Nigel that's great to hear!

Our ICT co-ordinator is enquiring about PSE8 being installed in our suite which would be out of this world. In my head, it's going to be one week snapping, one week PPiing. We'll have to see though, if they're anything like me, they're not gonna be willing to wait a week to see thier results!

Consider cameras that are tough, as well. I have heard that some of the Fuji bridges are really quite fragile. As for things like lens hoods, get rid of them - you don't want anyone chewing them or breaking them and then injuring themselves with the small parts,...You know what kids are like :P
