OK this is purely curiosity (for the moment) but can I ask what are the prices that anyone is seeing this lens go for in the UK.
The prices I have so far found tend to be around £740+ is this typical or has anyone seen this for less.

Also does anyone have one of these yet and if so what is your opinion of it.

I'm currently thinking of this as lens for outdoor use, nothing too serious, more as a really good walkabout lens.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance :thumb:

£695 at Warehouse Express and their prices are usually very competitive.

I'm sure this will be a very sought after lens, and being L glass will no doubt be worth every penny. The problem with it for me is the fact that on a 1.6X sensor it's only the equivalent of a 38.5 mm lens, so not particularly wide for a general purpose lens. On a 1:1 sensor of course it would be a very desirable lens.

The 24-70mm f/2.8L is £750 on Onestop-digital and is held in pretty high regard, isn't it? I was under the impression that the 24-70L and the 16-35L were the flagship zooms for the L range, much used by photojournalists.

And if I might hijack the thread slightly, does anyone know of a lens that would fulfil all of these criteria:

1) Around 16mm at the wide end (18mm would be upper limit)
2) Around 70mm at the long end (could maybe go down to 60mm or perhaps even 50mm)
3) f/2.8 all the way through the zoom.
4) Quite a bit sharper than the kit lens.

I realise that's asking a lot and thanks to Steve for suggesting the Tamron SP AF 28-75mm f/2.8 XR Di LD. Unfortunately 28mm is nowhere near wide enough for my walking around needs. Not on a 20D anyway. When I rented the 16-35L I really noticed the extra 2mm at the wide end, compared to the kit lens.

The only lens I can think of that matches that criteria is the Sigma 18-50mm F2.8 for around £330.
It's not great quality and no HSM focus but there aren't any quality wide F2.8-medium telephoto zooms available.

Thanks for the reply SDK.

That's pretty much what I expected. That Sigma would be about right if it was better quality but I don't fancy paying £330 just to get the benefit of f/2.8. If it was sharper than the kit lens then it might be a different matter.

Cheers
