Im really not enjoying photography at the moment and im currently 50/50 about selling up... Im trying to get a handle on how much my gear is worth in a 2nd hand market. Having been out of photography for a while i havent a clue about current prices.

****Canon EF 1.4x TCII <--- forgot about that.

Thats about it, ive got loads of Hoya Pro1D filters inc rear drop in for the 300f2.8IS, but, i cannot list everything.

I dont want any PMs off the back of this thread please, i just want some ideas of total value or even suggested sale prices for each item. Thanks for any help, Darryn.

Don't do it man. Give it another go first.

Cheers KayJay.

Ive gone thru this thought process a couple of times before, always between motorsport seasons... Thats all i enjoy photographing tbh, and with the almost £6k from the sale of the gear+another grand or so from the sale of 1 of my Macpros, i could pretty much buy a trackcar, then id be taking part badly rather than taking photos badly.

Ive got a trackday at Elvington on the 14th Feb, and my final decision to sell or not, will probably be based on how i feel after that.

Well all the best mate. I had a look at your flickr stream and enjoyed a lot of what I saw especially the MotoGP (?) and the British F1 GP. A track car would be a lot of fun. I've always wanted to get myself an R32 Skyline GTR for a bit of track action but don't have the cash for that kind of thing. Plus my wife would most likely damage me in some way lol.

With £7K I'd be picking up a brand new Gixer 6 K7 and screaming about Scotland! lol If you do sell I could be eyeing your 5D :)

I was in the same boat as you before Xmas ,i sold all my camera gear tripods lenses ,everything to do with photography .

Had a inkling about getting back into Motocross ,that was short lived ,i missed the photography too much once i'd sold the kit .I'm now on the steep hill trying to build it up again :shake:.

I've seen your work ,if thats what you call BAD!!! i may as well call it a day :D

The message is ... DON'T!!!! make the mistake i've just made ,plus you've a hellova lot more kit than me to start all over again .. Good lock anyways mate ,thats my tuppence worth

From experience: Selling everything will leave a bit of a void even if you do use the money for something else. Make sure you leave yourself a dslr, walkabout and zoom in your bag even if it is a 40D and non L glass.

Option 2.

Sell the 5D + 24-70 + Flash x 2 + Tripod.

That should give you over 2K to buy a track toy & you can still shoot Motorsport while it's being fixed :)

Some sane advice from the man with the sane monicker.

Id definately want a digi-compact, and the Leica D-Lux 3, really is a sexy work of art. Or id stick with Canon and get the G10... but it would only be for blog/snapsnot/ebay type photos.

I think you'll find you will get very high quality shots out of a G10.

Could you not keep the cheaper kit and sell the more expensive stuff? May be try to trade down with some sort of 'kit and cash' deal?

It does seem mad to have so much money tied up in gear that you aren't using. It's not as if it will be worth more if you keep it longer.

I share this same view, dont give it up totally, get yourself a 40d and a decent zoom lens for days when you want to photograph track and not take part!
You will miss it too much, and then you will be starting from scratch again. Id say "trade+cash" on items is probably your best bet. If you fancy a trade for a 40d with the sigma 24-70 f2.8 for the 1dmkii and the canon 24-70 f2.8 then drop me a pm ;)

Just a quick update, ive decided to keep hold of most of my gear and just sell the stuff i really dont use. :)

For Sale Thread

That way i keep my glass and 1dmkII, this will leave me with 1 body for the F1 which is a slight concern, but, im hoping to borrow a spare off a friend for that weekend just in case. :)

Why not just sell a bit?

You don't really need the flash guns for motor sport -- that'd be £800 back. You could flog the 5D too and quite a bit else, and just keep a body and a decent lens or two and still get amazing pictures.

I'm focusing on one area too. Photography is too 'vast' to try and do it all. It doesn't have to be all or nothing. :)

You'll only regret it when you wanna take a picture sometime.

EDIT: I didn't see that above post -- good thinking! ;)

Not wishing to hijack Darryn's thread but it saves starting a new one, I'm thinking of selling my EF-S 60mm macro and can't find many sales on here to base an asking price around. Is there a simple way of pricing up second hand kit? Can someone think of a price I should be selling at?

:( Sad news - quite simply dont do it.

Bet you already know that most folks will never own a full frame and 'L' glass......

At least leave yourself a chance

........ the passion for a great photo is all that matters.

Here's where my passion started with some crappy camera or other - and I wish I could even get near your level! - stay with it dude and continue the art of inspiration. It might not be a great pic but when I took it I thought it was the dogs! - then I searched the web for more, and realised I had more to learn - better photographers inspire us.

Thanks for that Mr "All Bar One", but, i simply dont get any pleasure out of photography anymore, i tried differant things to spice it up a little, and my shyness/people skills makes it hard for me to feel comfortable doing it. I have never, imo, taken a good photo... the only one ive done which i consider to be good, simply because i had the idea, took the photos and created exactly what i had set out to achieve... This, i know now there are lenses and photoshop scripts for doing exactly this, but, i created it myself without the aid of a guide, just some thought and experimentation with photoshop.

I used to really enjoy getting to motorsport events and rattling off a few thousand shots to keep maybe 50 half decent ones, now im driving and enjoying trackdays i can actually take part in these events, which to me, is infinitely more enjoyable.

Im in a lucky position where i can pretty much buy the best kit for any of my hobbies, Computers, NitroRC, SimRacing, Cameras and now driving, having the skill to use it to its potential is my downfall, with driving ive found something im genuinely quite good at and it just happens to be the most expensive of my hobbies so far. :)

hello darryn.

just curious to ask what you drive/ride.

have you done any of the sprints at elvington.

was it with the Auto66 club.

if yes i may have some shots of you participating in the event.

cheers paul

I drive a Honda Civic Type R Ep3... Ive done 1 trackday at Elvington, only couple of weeks back and off the back of that im in the process of uprating the car to be more suited to track fun.

The Elvington layout was too flat and open for my liking and once ive uprated the necessary bits and bobs ill be doing many more events, circuit based rather than airfield. The tutor on the day gave me some good pointers and a nice confidence boost. :)
