Yes
Right, the wife has a meeting in Prague coming up and is bugging me to tag along. However she will have meetings whilst I am there. Is it worthwhile? I am not a great fan of city photography (or cities in general...) and that might be a little problem! Any good parks etc?

Go....!!

I spent a month there and thought it was fantastic

google Prague and have a virtual tour round the place

Yes!

The city itself, the buildings, the bridges, the architecture is awesome.First time I went I wasn`t into cities or buildings, but still appreciated what I was seeing. The cathedral on top of the hill is splendid.

100% go - its the most amazing place for photography:beer: and fantastic beer

Ooops, silly me, forgot to mention that important fact, stay away from the square and it is cheap too........:D

I Dont think you are going to get any negatives from this post,
So take it as read that you are going.
We all would.

We went at the end of January with all the snow..... worth it? Betcha, even if Marianne slipped on the ice and broke her wrist.

http://www.bazzac.co.uk/prague - only on a baby camera!

We imposed a "don't take the big stuff on our weekend break" ban - LoL

Prague is a beautiful city, a photographers paradise.
I went there back in 2001 and only wished I had my 50D back then, but unfortunately all I had was a 3.2 Megapixel Sony DSC-P1. My first digital camera.
In fact I think it was Sony's first digital camera.....not sure.
Go, go, go you won't be dissapointed.
The bridges and architecture that the city has to offer is some of the best, if not the best in eastern Europe.
The night life is, "interesting " too!!.....but unfortunately you'll be with the wife.

Agree about the prices there now, stay away from the main square and it's OK though...try the Krusovice 'dark' beer...forget all the blonde pilsner - this stuff is the tops...
If you want to photograph the Charles Bridge, get there uber-early as it's packed with tourists from 08.00 onwards...

Charles Bridge was/is in a state of restoration and has covered working areas with non-photogenic scaffolding. Agree with Arkady about the tourists..... that pretty much applies to a lot of the more 'well-known' sites.

& dont forget to rub that "love" statue on the Charles bridge as well.. Cant remember for the life of me what she was called.....:bang:

I could go (again) in your place if you'd like  The Jewish cemetry is extremely photogenic as well as all of the other things mentioned.

Its love that is taking me there. Or at least the wife getting grumpy!

On an associated note, should I find myself a wide angle lens for this trip? I have a 18-50 f2.8 siggy but I guess something wider may be required...

I took a "bigma" when we went..... Bit too big for some shots that I wanted but if you have one then take it just in case as you'll never know... felt "safe as houses" walking around with it thou.. Even at night!!

Enjoy it.....

Blimey, that is some walkabout lens! I would take what is in my bag but I do worry about the wide end of things...

Have you seen the film "Hostel" ???

lots of bridges, architecture, little alleys etc. I would love to spend some time taking photos there !

favourite city in the entire world, actually can't count how many times i've been there, want any tips on the place let me know :)

i'm intrigued.... why stay away from the main square?

Budapest is now the 'new' Prague apparently - and even better for atmospheric grungy e-bloc and shabby former e-bloc architecture...

Fab place but keep an eye on your kit!!!

I never felt that I had to worry... was a good police presence when we was there... Felt safe as houses...

Serious rip off on prices and a lot of Ukrainians who want to help themselves to your possessions.

I used to live in Prague for about 15 month - to me that is the essence of the old European city, great architecture, a lot of things to photograph, great food and beer ;)

It has since become busier with tourists so it is now harder to get the photos you need without too many people in them but I agree with Rob here

If you want to photograph the Charles Bridge, get there uber-early as it's packed with tourists from 08.00 onwards...

if you get up really early you can get Charles Bridge and Old Town Square relatively empty. And by really early I mean significantly earlier than 8:00 (just before sunrise would be a good start).

try the Krusovice 'dark' beer...forget all the blonde pilsner - this stuff is the tops...

Umm, Rob, did you really had to mention that?:D
Tmave Krušovice (dark one) is my favourite beer and the only thing that I yet didn't managed to find here in UK (as a draught - Sainsburys was selling it in a bottles but that was not the same at all).

Been to BudaPest numerous times, beautiful place that has been rebuilt with great care to its original looks.

Thanks all! I would much rather be somewhere like fracster is though.

I really enjoyed it there too, if you have spare time go to the Staropramen brewery for a quick tour and then sample the three beers they make afterwards, they only export the middle one to the UK, the dark is lovely!

I know staropramen far too well. Even the one they export here is damn good!
