Anyone had any experience selling via gumtree? I was hoping to conclude a deal in person but i've an offer to post. It doesn't seem like the normal i'll give you 2 x the money if you post to my granny in Nigeria but i'm still wary. Anything in particular i should look out for? If this person pays via bank transfer and the money shows in the account is there any way he can retrieve it without my permission?

Personally I wouldn't sell anything via Gumtree - to many scams

I certainly would not be posting anything to someone on there or giving them my bank details

Not much they can do with the bank details but I was worried about the funds showing then leaving the account. I might speak to the bank about it. I've asked the guy to upload a photo of his passport so we'll see how we get on. Thanks for your reply.

If the money gets there in the first place

It is also worth noting that some banks will claw back funds on a clients behalf if the client convinces them they have made a mistake in making the payment

True. I just called my bank and spoke with them about that very fact. They've told me to free up/clear out my savings account by transferring the money into mu current account till this transaction has gone through. They've said that any claim by the other party that they've transferred the money by mistake has to be done within 48 hours so i should let them transfer the money, lift the money from the account then post the item after the 48 hour period. They've told me that another bank cannot take anything from a savings account if there is nothing in there as they don't have overdrafts etc and to keep a hold of my emails as proof there was a deal being made. I think i'm confident in doing this now. The guy has uploaded his passport, drivers license and police retirement certificate. I just wish i could confirm his address online. Just for peace of mind.

My experience would tell me if it does not feel right, its not right, I would go
with my instinct even if it costs me a sale.

So basically, this bloke is going to put the money for the item in your bank account, he has copied his passport, driving licence and police retirement certificate to you already.

Then you are going to wait 48 hours before you post out the item, yet you still want peace of mind?

Seems to me the buyer doesn't have your trust issues!

Absolutely! There is NO way that I would upload my passport or driving licence to anyone, let alone a complete stranger.

:runaway:

Ive done this many times mate as my feedback will show without any issues. I've also read many times about gumtree scams where money shows in an account but has either never arrived there or been removed. I can't afford to replace the camera should this be a scam that's all.

After being stung.......get all the reassurance you need.........!

Why on earth use Gumtree if you are so worried about scams then?

The point I was trying to make in my last post was what makes you so trustworthy with the fella's money?

Because I was hoping to meet with someone face to face.

The point I'm making is that there may not be any money for him to worry about.

Send them to me, give me half an hour with Photoshop, and I think you'll find they're actually *MY* passport, drivers licence and police retirement certificate.
I just wish i could confirm his address online.
There might be ways of doing that. I'll PM you.

O..M FURKING GAWD are there still people out there that fall for these scams ,TOTALLY anything with the word NIGERIA connected to it should be treated wholly and 100% as a scam .they are the original internet scamming country i don't care if they can show you a personal letter from the president of the country ,it will still be a scam ,i nearly got caught a couple of times by extremely slick looking letters supposedly from paypal asking to do the same thing as your being asked .they are very good at twisting things and online forgeries .
TBH your better off selling the camera on e/bay and paying there fees than on gumtree

CANCEL THE DEAL ,BLOCK THERE E/MAIL AND DO NOT UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES SEND YOUR CAMERA .!!!!!!!!!

Eh??? What's Nigeria got to do with it?

Ah, just realised, you must have skimmed the OP.

Any road up, I've said it before and I'll keep saying it - my e-bay policy is if I have the slightest little doubt, I walk away, without question or hesitation.

Same with Gumtree only faster.

I don't think he's sending it to Nigeria - I think you've misread the initial post.
I think he was using that as a typical example of a scam....

Without knowing the full story,of where it's going nobody can really help

Oops mis.read the initial post ,just do a google maps satellite view on the address and pull off the little man figure to view it and ascertain the type of address .i always find a phone conversation puts the mind to rest to

You know what you could do - make a shout out to a member on here and send it to them, then the person can collect from that address. I've done this on other forums for car parts as it's more secure :) I'm near Salisbury if it helps! I'm also going to Devon on Saturday and would be happy to drop the item off if it was on route etc!

Good call mate. I've bit the bullet and posted it now after removing the money from my savings account. Hopefully it's done and dusted now.
