I want to sort out what post processing software to have and keep.

At the moment I have PSE 7 with Noiseware, thats it.

I was thinking about upgrading from PSE 7 to PSE 8 and also getting lightroom.

Should I do this? Is it worth updrading from PSE 7 to 8 or should I get just lightroom?

Or

Instead of all that should I spend my money on getting something from Niksoft like silver efex pro etc?

Most of what you see can be done in either software, I think a more useful tool would be the Silver Efex Pro plugin which is how the first two create such gorgeous B/W shots.

Have you used the trials of PSE8 and Lightroom? That would be my first port of call. Lightroom won't be as good as Elements at processing, but is a lot better at image organisation and batch editing.

As greysquirrel says, grab the silver efex pro plugin for edgy effects with PE or LR

No not tried the trails of PSE 8 although I am trying out the Lightroom trial. I really like Lightroom, the workflow is really nice however you don't have as much diversity on the editing side of the photos as you do in PSE eg adding watermarks. Silver Efex pro is awesome too, giving the trial version ago of that too.

I think I will get Lightroom and Silver Efex Pro I think. Does anybody else use PS and Lightroom combo then? Is it best to edit the photo first and then import it into Lightroom or the other way around? Sort out the photo in Lightroom and do the more detailed editing in PSE7?

I use the Lightroom PSE8 combo, I do everything in Lightroom, then if (very rarely) I need to do some processing involving layers I'll export to Elements and then reimport the Tiff back to Lightroom.

Cool, glad to see that someone else is doing the combo that I am thinking about but please forgive me but why do use TIFF files rather than JPG? Surely importing it back into LR will show two of the same photo in the catalog part which is what I had a problem with.

I am just getting my head around the non-destructive part of LR which I really like. I was really confused in the catalog part that when I had edited a photo in LR and then exported it to a subfolder, it looked like I had two of the same photo. To sort this out I removed the sub folder option and kept that hidden as these will be the files that I will upload to Flickr or any forums.

How does everybody else do there work flow in LR?

When Lightroom initially exports the image, it tags the filename with '-Edit', if you choose to make a copy rather than edit the original (but then you'll lose any adjustments you've already made in Lightroom).

e.g. myphoto.CR2 (if you're using RAW source) or myphoto.jpg (if JPEG) becomes myphoto-Edit.tif

They're then independent files.

Lightroom is well fussy and fiddly with it's folders, collections and whatnot and it does take a while to get your head around it.

oh just tried exporting a file and it didnt put -edit on the end of it, am I doing something wrong?

What workflow do you guys do in LR?

A jpeg is a compressed file, great for posting online/showing people, but pants for editing. Tiffs are much better as they have values for each individual pixel so can be manipulated easier.

ah right never knew that, might have a look at TIFF files.

I just want some clarificaton of my LR workflow, this is what I do

1. Import photos into LR
2. Decide which I want to keep with star system etc
3. Develop/Edit the photos I am keeping
4. Any that I want to export so I can use on Flickr/forums etc are exported in JPEG into a seperate folder which is not shown within LR as it will show two thumbnails of the same photo which would get confusing.
5. Repeat as nesscessary until all photos are complete.

Thats the basic way I do it, any other additions or tips would be great :D

How did you export the file? If you right click and select edit in>PSE7/CS? or whichever, it will clreate the tiff file with -edit and open it in your esditing software. Then, when you've finished, saving it will update the -edit version in LR.

That is pretty much how I do it, although I don't bother keeping jpegs that I export, I use them, then bin them. If you are using Flickr it is worth using one of the flickr export plug ins, your images go straight to Flickr.
