Hi all

Listening to the news today and I hear it's OK to discriminate against white males when employing new staff  This is not a racist thing (from me anyway) but is this right?

shouldnt think so - but does that then mean if your crap and they dont take you on the are being crappist lol

whole worlds gone barmy-ifthey are black or pink or green dont employ any of them-they will only shy away from work as soon as the sun comes or they have a hangover-give more jobs to poor homeless people-theyll be there early in the morning

Tis right enough it seems....

Harman pushes discrimination plan

Harriet Harman sets out plans to MPs

Equality minister Harriet Harman has set out plans to allow firms to discriminate in favour of female and ethnic minority job candidates.
She said firms should be able to choose a woman over a man of equal ability if they wanted to - or vice versa.
The new Equalities Bill will also force public sector employers to disclose the gender pay gap in their organisation.
The plans, which will be adopted in England, Wales and Scotland, will also ban all age discrimination.
Setting out the plans in a Commons statement, Ms Harman said the proposed bill - due later this year - would "address the serious inequalities that still exist" in the UK

Yeah I heard that too
I think what they actually said was that if two candidates were identically quailified, and one was from and "ethnic minority" background
and the other was yer average Jo ( white native British)
then preference should be given to the one from the "ethnic minority" background.
PC seems to stand for Pathetic C***'s these days :(

edit must type faster

ha ha what a joke. at my work, there is 7 people working, all white male. my boss isnt racist, just that the people who apply and are experienced happen to be white. there has only been one ethnic minority apply, he had to get someone to phone and ask if they had to be able to speak english!!

I can see the basics of *why* this has been thought up.
But I certainly don't agree with it. It's basically giving them the choice of actively choosing the 'minority/female' etc without fear of reprisal.

The problem for me is that it's yet another load of absolute toss.
We are still going to have racism, we'll still have sexism.

The only way racism and sexism will be stamped out is if people stop bloody drawing attention to it all the ****ing time!

Job applications "What ethinicity are you...what colour are you".
Why does it matter?
Oh we need to fill a certain quota of ethnic minorities etc etc.
What a load of crap. When I worked for the BBC they were the worst I'd seen, my boss was constantly worrying about getting enough ethnic minorities to take part in the service we were providing.......why?

Everyone is equal, and we need to treat them as such. Stop worrying about being accused of racism. Lets stop making skin colour or sex an issue, and ONLY then, once skin colour isn't so prominent in peoples minds all the time (with damaging crap like this), will we have the harmonious society that we strive for (or as good as we're gonna get anyway).

This all true and very well put.

However, Unfortunately, a large part of the political system, large old companies and the legal/health-care system is/are run by people we would consider the 'old guard'

Even more unfortunately these people have grown up with institutionalised racist/sexist behaviours and whilst they're still in positions of power there needs to be a system in place to protect the rights of minorites. E.G. Womens average wage is still only 87% that of a male equivalent in the same position.

We are on the cusp of these dinosaur attitudes dying out, just look at how far we have come in the last 50 years. Give it another 50 and nobody will be talking about race or sex.

Anyone seen Alf Garnett recently?

I seriously doubt you could make a programme like Alf Garnett now, H Harman would be up in arms!!
No wonder some people vote for the BNP!!

the negative discrimination as a mongral, (half blood) i have to put up with some positive discrimination would be nice

Absolutely could not agree more.

Whatever happened to being best suited for the job? When was the last time you were hiring and had 2 candidates that were identical in every way? There's always a choice to be made.

Interestingly my wife's (who works in the NHS) reaction to this last night was... "Why should women be paid the same or be chosen over men? We all b****r off and have kids FFS!" (she's 8 months pregnant by the way ;)
