Hi guys

i am after some advice before i go out and spend another £1000 on a lens .
i am shooting portraits at home in my back room . i`m quite well of with space . 15ft width and around the same length .

i have two lens i can use a canon EF 24- 105mm 1:4 l is which gives good results .

and a EF 85mm 1:1.2 l mk 2 that gives such fantastic sharp photo`s.

can anybody recomend a lens that will give me the results of the 85mm .
i want a lens that will capture a group shot .

I have the 70-200 2.8 IS which I use for portraits, albeit not in a studio environment! I find it is excellent :)
 
I'm not sure whether you're FF or crop but the 50L isn't far behind the 85L for IQ so may be worth looking at. The 35L's also fine but I don't find the 24L quite in the same league....although it is very acceptable.

The OP wants to take group photos in a 15ft long room, and you guys recommend a telephoto lens???? :shrug:

You say you own the 24-105, and get good results. Are you finding 24mm not wide enough or is the lens not as sharp as you would like?

yep this is the problem 24 - 105 if fantastic .. But having just got a canvas back taken with the 85mm of my son and daughter wow it just blows the socks of the 24 - 105 for sharpness .

we did some portraits of 3 boys and had to use the 24 - 105 and where they are very good and the people we did them for are happy . we also took some of the boys one at a time with the 85mm and again alot sharper . i`m not saying on smaller prints they don`t look as good , but blow up the 24 - 105 will be alot softer .

if i were just using the 24 - 105 i would be happy .

so i`m looking for a quality fixed lens or 2 .

i could look all day at this lens and that but if there are people who have used something then that advice is very important .

While the 24-105 is good in its own right, its more suited to be used as a high quality "walkabout" lens rather than for studio portraiture. While i know for a fact the Canon 24-70 f/2.8L is tack sharp, its not going to be prime sharp, which i guess is what your after. I don't know much about Canon's wide angle prime selection, but they sure have a lot to choose from. Depending on whether you are shooting full frame or cropped sensor will probably half the amount to look at, as 30mm+ will probably be too long. I hear nothing buy praise about the Sigma 30mm f/1.4 HSM, but I'm still yet to see examples of the exceptional IQ people speak of. As for the canon line up, these are the contenders imo.

24mm f/1.4L
35mm f/1.4L
20mm f/2.8
35mm f/2

It may be worth trying to get some feedback on those!
 
My kit lens is quite wide, want to borrow that? :lol:

I am going to put it to the test at the wedding

i do use the 24 - 105 for weddings and it is fantastic , as said the 85mm is pin sharp and maybe i`m just being a little fussy . but when you pay the amount of cash for kit you want it to be of the same quality as the others in the same class .

i use a 5d and 30d as a back up .


people have mentioned the nifty fifty . is this a sharp lens . or is it just good for the money .

I can't speak for the canon version, but the Nikon is very, very sharp. 50mm should be wide enough on the 5D.

Hi Kevin lol :woot: . he might be about to take a trip here . and it was Aly who said about another lens or two . :love:

as you know she like to help edit my photo`s., and was blow away with the 60cm x 85cm canvas of Jacob and Carly we have just had back from 101 .:thumbs: taken with the 85mm

but i do find it tough to justify spending any more cash . watch this space .

with a little luck i`ll find one like the 85mm still think i got a bargain at £900

I dont think the 50mm 1.8 is going to be as sharp as you 24mm 1.4l tbh

maybe the 50mm 1.2L (or the 1.4) might put up a good fight :)

I think your only solution is to stick with the 85mm lens that you obviously love (not that I am jealous :p)and....


Get a bigger room :D:D:D

i might go for 50mm 1.2L . Bigger room would be nice . i do have a pool table in there as well . the room is around 24ft in length when doing portraits i move the pool table to the back . giving me around 15 ft when table is backed against the sofa .

No i can`t the pool table stays it`s the :rules:
 
The 50L on your 5D will be almost as good as your 85L....I have both (along with the 35L, 24L and 14L). You won't be disappointed with the 50L if it's wide enough.

cheers for all the input guys , i have the 24L , i`ll do a test but i`m sure the 50mm would be fine , and if that is a close match for the quality of the 85mm then that i think will be the one :thumbs:

now next question where is the best place to get it :bang::bonk: sorry
