Hi,
A friend of the family had asked me to photograph some of her wedding and birthday cakes for her website as she is starting her business up.

Any tips?

Also is 72dpi the best setting the convert the image to jpeg for her website, as I want them to be clear images when published not grainy or low red?

Try and make as natural as possible with good use of depth of field and get a good brief as to what she wants!

Bugler, dpi has nothing to do with web display. Its all about pixel dimensions. Take your shots, then resize a copy to 800x600 and remember to sharpen a bit. SRGB color space. Your friend can then crop/resize for their web page quite easily.

A nice clean background that you can recreate for the future cakes, sites look better with the same background for each image, maybe create somthing for it?

Watch out for shadows if you use flash

make sure you get everything in, watch out for explosions sticking out the top of the cake on wires (normally not used on wedding cakes)

Capture the details closer butterflies, flowers beads what ever is on there.

Crop it well so that the cake is the thing on show no point having wasted space
