Hi,

I hope you can offer me some advice. I have recently started doing more portrait photography (especially of children at the moment and particularly hi-key if that makes a difference). I bought a Canon EF 85mm f/1.8 USM which I love the results from however I am limited for space at the moment and find I don't really have enough space for this lens. Can anyone suggest one the gives really nice quality portrait photos in more limited spaces? I'm sure there will be various different opinions but would be nice to hear some recommendations please.

Thanks for your help,

Claire

I would think that the obvious one to suggest would be the nifty fifty - 50/1.8 You can pick one up for £75 or so. It's a very well thought of lens for the money.

Just one other thing - I am sure someone with much more knowledge will pass by to confirm this later - Have you considered the difference that a wider lens will make to your portraits? Sure you will be able to fit them in but it may well change the view a little.

I have not taken any portrait pics at all, but have taken a few pics of my puppy. With the 100mm, she looks lovely. With the 50mm, because you have to get a little closer to get her frame filling, she's developed a massive nose!! Not sure whether this would be so pronounced with a human who will hopefully have a smaller nose than my pup, but perhaps worth a mention.

Sorry if I'm talking rubbish, as I said, I've never taken a portrait!!

The nifty fifty is an ideal starter portrait lens as on a crop sensor it is actually equivalent to 80mm

It really depends on how much space you have and what sort of portraits you want to shoot.

My area means the subject is only 3Metres maximum away from the camera, the 85mm is great for head and shoulders at this distance, the 50mm will cover someone seated, (just) or upper torso and head shots, for anything else or for close self portraits I use a Tamron 17-50mmF2.8 and looking at the data on my PC mainly seem to use the 28mm and 17mm settings on it.

I would suggest trying the 50mm F1.8 as its both cheap and a cracking lens for the money that has more uses than you first envisage

Thanks for your replies, I decided to go for the 50 mm 1.4.

Thanks,

Claire
