Hi All

I've been planning to take a trip down to dorset for over a year now, but always cancelled at the last minute. I've researched as much as I can for carparks etc but wanted to know if anyones done it/has any info for me with this trip?

My plan is to leave mine in the midlands at 7pm, this will mean my arrival is just after 10pm. Gather some shots of the lighthouse and night sky etc then get a fee hours kip in the van. Wake up at 4am for sunrise shots. Once i have those, take a steady drive to lyme regis and lulworth cove before heading home mid afternoon tomorrow.

Anything i should be aware of?

Portland Bill is easily accessible and there is a large car park by the lighthouse on Portland Bill (not sure about overnight parking though). There is a café close by as well and also a fish and chips shop about a mile from the car park. Weather permitting its a great spot.

Sounds like a great idea.

Might be an idea to leave slightly earlier so you can set up in a bit of daylight though.

I've been to Lyme Regis and Lulworth Cove but never been to Portland Bill.

We're on hols from tomorrow and maybe heading to Lyme first (due to weather forecast).

Look out for a Peugeot Boxer van sort of converted to camper.
Oh and a GSD/Collie cross dog.

I can't offer any useful info re: parking etc. but good luck and keep us all informed.

We're in the Midlands too)

Terry.

The pulpit inn public house looks good to me. Literally seconds from the lighthouse too.

I was considering a b&b, but ill be up at 4am so not worth it for how long im sleeping

We've not tried the pubs on the site yet but will be doing so over the next 2 weeks.

Hopefully be able to park near the sea in various places and test out the XT-1.

Just wish I had fast wide angle for the Milky Way.

I'll have to see what I can do with the 35mm f1.4.

I'm aiming for milky way with an f4....wish me luck.

Seen plenty of titorials on how to get it, high iso though :(

I got some reasonable shots 2 years ago on my D700 with the 16-35F4.

ISO was high though and the camera was showing it's age in low night noise levels.

If I can see it with my naked eye and get enough of it in the frame F1.4 should be good. (If I'm not too p***sed by then)

We'll see.

Actually I've still got the X100 that's for sale.

I may give that a go too.

23mm f2 lens may be good for the MW.

That's what lens I'm using, although it's with a d810 i'll be taking the shots. Had rhe camera since march and never had time to use it :(

A bit later than planned, but I got here last night....time to take some shots

I was there a couple of weeks ago!

I went on the 23rd July for my wife's birthday as she used to go all the time as a kid.

Don't go Durdle Door on a Saturday....there were thousands of people there that weekend. I took one photo there.

Sounds like you planned it better than me! Try and cram in Corfe Castle while you're there if possible...there was an awesome fog early in the morning over and through the remains...brilliant.
