Hi guys,

I am hoping to get a site online with all my portfolio stuff soon. I do a bit of websites work already, so have a rough idea what it needs, but really need some help in terms of 'must have' features I should look out for so I don't miss anything.

Just wondered what sort of things you guys look for in a portfolio site and how fancy it needs to be? Any good websites/examples that spring to mind?

check out Zenfolio and get a free trial.

It does a good job for me and it is a reasonable cost. They have plenty customization options.

I think the basics are a good homepage, and from there simplicity.

I have a referral which gets you 10% off I think if you use it

As an example this is my portfolio website, www.tannachyphotography.co.uk

I'd definitely recommend using one of the dedicated providers unless you are very good at web design. I'd just browse some successful photographers and see how their sites look and copy what you like.

I think you really need to write down your objectives, that'll give you a list of requirements. Your requirements could differ completely from the next guy, that's why there's loads of choice.

Personally I don't understand 'portfolio site', there are loads of ways of sharing your pictures with the world without the hassle of running a website, but that's just MHO.

Thanks guys, I'll take a look at Zenfolio.

So it seems that the 'sharing' aspect is pretty important.

@Tannachy, love your website. What package is that with on Zenfolio, some of the 'business' features I am not too sure how useful they would be. Is there anything Zenfolio doesn't do?

I think Phils suggestion is a good one... have a browse around other sites on the web as this should help you decide what features are available and if they will be useful, or not, for you
