Now, here is just something I was wondering about. Self made studios.

Has anyone ever tried turning a shipping container into a working photography studio? The ones that fit onto the back of Lorries and Trucks. I have seen people turn them into homes, and just wondered if anyone had thought about using it for a studio instead. I know it would be cheaper than buying somewhere if i had somewhere to put it. It probably has but I have not seen them thats all.

hmm, magnet to spigot adapters for lights? :D

could work, you've got the length... a bit weird and claustrophobic though >_<

I wouldn't, and if you've ever been in the back of one of those things in the middle of summer you would know why i say this, it's basically like being in a sauna once you get any heat on them, thats without lights inside, i'm sure there must be other options, surely if you have room for a 20-40ft container you have room for a purpose built shed ?

A friend has one as a workshop but customers walking upto a container for a portrait sitting wont give the right impression i wouldn't have thought. Bit narrow too.

Well, ITs more for painting in but thought i might be able to utilise a small space for myself to photo my paintings and general messing in. I'm no pro, so its solely as a just me space really, just got a budget and want a workspace. Was thinking maybe a 8 x 20 to 30

Triggered my thoughts, obviously you'd have to think about ventilation etc, but thats not a problem as such. Means I could in theory still utilize the area above it for growing my veggies if i wanted to or simply space to sun myself.

Also is SWIMBO meant to be derogatory (as a general question that is completely OT) I'm just having trouble deciding.

SWMBO - there's no 'I' - and no, not generally. But if your partner's friend was to come to the door and ask you if St George was in, then possibly.

Wow nice idea. i really like it. it is basically like being in a sauna once you get any heat on them, thats without lights inside,I am sure there must be other options.

temperature control would be difficult but not impossible. Heating it in winter is easy but keeping it cool in summer would be interesting.

I don't know the prices of these but can't imagine that there is much difference between them and a timber structure of the same size. Timber building would look more attractive and be easier to work with.

I refer to my wife as SWMBO quite often (she who must be obeyed) and she knows I say it

I'm guessing these are quite expensive to buy, and the timber frame one would be a lot cheaper, particularly when it come's to cutting out for window frames, putting in power points etc.

As has been said, you are looking at a nightmare to heat and cool. They really are ovens in the summer and condensation in the winter would be unpleasant when you've got bodies in there. I'd go with the biggest log/timber building you can get in there at a price you can afford.

You can get 40' trailers, complete with wheels (which means that they're mobile so don't need planning permission) for about £600 delivered, or 40' containers for a lot less. I know this because unfortunately our land is in the North York Moors National Park, probably the most unreasonable planning authority you can find (and known locally as the National Front:) ) which is why we bought the wheeled version.

I belong to several shooting clubs, and nearly all of them use containers as club houses, and the're fine for that, and my guess is that they'd be fine for painting too, especially as you can have one end completely open - but they are far too narrow, and the roof is far too low for photography involving lighting, apart from the lack of heat insulation and the condensation problem.

Thanks all for your advice, portable is my main thing as i have no idea where i am going to be soon, my life seems to be getting crazier by the day.

Have a lot to think about what I need. I have seen people put in stuff to cope with humidity... Just cant find what i am looking for.

Surely unless you have a HGV a shipping container isn't all that portable.
