Portable Studio for a Wedding

lots of wedding photographers offer 'photo booth' sorts of things at weddings.

Wide range of equipment you could use, but for a single event you'd want to hire most likely...

This should also depend on what you're being paid to cover this wedding. Is there enough margin to cover the cost of a buying/renting the portable studio equipment and hiring a TOG for taking portraits?

I covered a wedding earlier this year where they hired a photobooth for the evening do, cost about £700 and after about 9pm, it wasn't being used.

Quite a few people use the Lastolite hi-lite. Good for 3/4 length or head and shoulder portraits. Portable and not too expensive 2nd hand.

Sorry to hi-jack your post but I'm also looking for a minimum setup but for High-key shoots. What would you recommend for portability and price...I've seen the ebay light setups which seem to be shocking. I have currently a Nissin flash I622 and a single white umbrella

cheers,

at the moment I'm not charging for the service as I was hoping to make some money back by selling prints at the venue......I'm not fussed about making a profit at this stage as long as I cover my costs to start with.....this is mainly for exposure for myself and if its successful I will start working out how much to charge for the service.....

This is a delicate subject, but selling prints at a wedding changes the whole feel of the day.

I cover maybe 20 or more wedding receptions with a studio every year, but we pre sell the service, we don't sell to guests. The B&G pay in advance and the photos are free to the guests on the evening.

If you're looking to do a test run by initially charging for the prints then personally I think that's a waste of time as the take up and process will be completely different.

Just my opinion of course.

I think this is a bit of a non starter. Either offer the service as Jeremy has described or offer it without any printing but supplying the images after to the B & G. Normally when I've seen this done its been a simple set up - hitlite with 2 heads inside and another 1 or 2 heads for the subjects.Either way it should be an extra sold to the bride and groom and not be expecting the guests to pay for it.

Minimum event kit is 2 lights and a background. Then you look at extra lights to light the background for white background shots onsite printing so a dyesub and laptop/PC to run that. People 2 one person shooting the other showing the images and printing them. Buying the kit your looking at about £2k if you buy the cheaper end lights and printer not including a laptop/PC.

Best thing is to get an event photographer to join you at the wedding, they have the kit and know the workflow and it will work far better than just gettting someone in who can take the photos and trying to work it out for yourself.

The selling to guests rather than a prepaid deal thats up to you, it depends on the couple if they will pay for you to do it that way or not. We have done plenty of selling on the night weddings and done very well we have done one and it didnt go down very well at all but in hindsight we should never have done that one with the information we had about the couple and saw what they hadn't spent on the venue or anything else to be honest.
