Okay, well I am doing a festival at the end of the month, I have shot this festival before and I ran out of space on both my 16gb Compact flash cards before. I want a device which I can plug them straight into and upload my images to that. sorta like a portable hard drive with a CF card reader which powers itself...

I am NOT taking a laptop with me!

What sort of technology is available? I know there was some old stuff made by Canon but was wondering if there was some new kit!

Found a few on Amazon that look like the kind of thing you're after:

NexToDi ND2730 500GB Memory card backup. For CF, SD, SDHC, SDXC.
HyperDrive ColorSpace UDMA II - 3.2" TFT LCD 1TB HDD
Ex-Pro® Picture 2 Drive EX205K SATA Photo Storage Image Tank 250Gb

First and second are pricey, third looks nasty but appears to do what you're after. I can't find much in the way of reviews on Amazon, so a bit risky.

A couple of others:

Wolverine PicPac (various sizes)
Digital Foci Picture Porter

... though I'm not sure if these are readily available in the UK.

Damn these are expensive! and the third looks like it is from 2000...

I might try taking along my Nexus along with me and also take along my 32gb USB drive.

Why not just buy more CF cards?

£ 15 for a reputable brand 16Gb CF card.

or

Canon M30/M80 or Epson P2000 or similar.

I have OCD with my camera gear, I would have to buy another San Disk Ultra 16gb... this storage device would also be used for my holiday in September...

I've got an iWith, sort of media player but takes compact flash cards and can be used to backup the cards easily. Also reads canon raw files so will display them if needed. It has a 2.5" laptop drive it it.

More cards or a cheap lappy/netbook to transfer images to. Maybe shoot JPEG to save space?

This may be going slightly off topic but a photographer on daybreak mentioned that the moment he took a shot they were sent instantly to his news desk. Does anyone know what they might be using to transmit the shots?

He worked for the sun newspaper and was shooting the royal baby. Got his photo on a two page spread in the paper.

some large events have large wifi coverage, some of the pro bodies (e.g. 1d series) have wifi modules so you could FTP them to wherever.

Or he has a MIFI (mobile wifi hotspot) which the camera is connected to, would take a while though depending on upload speed.
