I'm looking to get a portable SSD, anyone got any recommendations? I've been trialling using a portable WD hard drive for lightroom and want to move to a SSD for speed and performance. So far Im thinking of either a Samsung T3 portable SSD or a SanDisk 500 Portable SSD. I only have this years RAW files and LR catalogue on the SDD so I may be about to get away with 250GB but I was thinking of future proofing by going with a 500GB model. Is there anything I should be looking at, I had thought about a G Tech ATV thunderbolt enclosure but the 1TB 7200GB hard drive rather than SSD concerns me speed wise.

I have the predecessor to the T3 the T1. Works great via USB3 on the Mac. Although Thunderbolt is fast, your limiting factor is the drive. I get around 350MB/s write and 400+ read from the T1. ( and that's via a hub. Probably quicker direct) It's about 31/2 times quicker than a conventional HD

I was only thinking of thunderbolt as I have currently used up all 4 USB ports, it would free up a port. Thunderbolt SSDs are much more expensive so it's really a choice between a USB3 SSD or a thunderbolt 7200r hard drive. I'm guessing I would get better performance from the SSD.

Absolutely, especially if the HDD has to spin up first. However opening an image in LR is also processor dependent, so you might find it take a little longer than you might expect (though not much longer than opening off an internal SSD, if you have one).
