Hi guys,

I am really doing well with my photography, have got quite a few pictures of mine in a local monthly horse magazine, and the owner of the mag always gives me heads up of shows coming up. I also sell the photos to the competitors, but after the show, rather than at the show.

This leads me onto my question. What kind of set up would I require to be able to do the prints there and then. I have an Apple Mac with Lightrooms, which I can check pictures with, but what's the best reasonably priced portable printer out there? I probably won't have much access to electric, as most shows are in fields!

Any ideas? Will pay around the £100 mark, give or take. Also, would like various print size options, most people buy 6x4 or 8x6 prints, with the occasional order for slightly bigger prints.

Thanks guys!

GULP!!

Really!?? I was looking at the Canon CP900, which is a portable photo printer, I thought something like that would be suitable??

No if you are printing on site you need a professional dye sub printer. You also need a generator, gazebo, main sales computer and viewing screen computer, tables, signs, insurance, someone to run the sales stand.

The normal size for event photography is 9x6 or 8x6, I offer 9x6 on the day and take orders for 12x8, and offer 7x5 on the website too.

I'd be wary of getting a heads up from the magazine owner too- are you the official photographer for the shows you are taking photos at and selling at? Because if there is a professional event tog there as the official photographer they will not be happy that you're taking photos with the view to selling. You need to liase with show organisers rather than a magazine.

Thanks Twizzel. Yep, don't worry, I only go to shows where there is no other photographer, and I always introduce myself to the organisers.

Just checking because it's every event photographer's pet hate... it can destroy someone's business as you can imagine.

Really though, you can't do it on the cheap, I started up under my own name at the beginning of the 2012 season and have been printing on site since sept 2012... it does take investment but if done properly it will pay dividends- my printer paid for itself within 2 good shows. Currently contemplating buying a 12x8 printer but that's got to come after I've kitted my new trailer out- got sick of fighting with a gazebo! You're probably looking at £3k minimum to start the printing on site business, and don't forget insurance.

Thanks again Twizzel, I appreciate your help!! Seems I will have to really think about this!
