Hi guys.

I'm looking at buying a portable background for portrait photography and, after a quick search, I think that I would like a muslin background as I don't particularly like the idea of transporting a massive roll of paper in my car (it's only a little Micra!).

As I can only buy one background for the time-being what type would you guys recommend? I see white, grey and black along with all sorts of mottled effect muslin in different colours. I'm thinking grey could be a good idea because I could both underexpose to make it dark or use flash to overexpose for a high-key look.

Also, what type of stands will I need?

Cheers,
Connor.

Muslin is appalling for creases, you might need a rethink.

I have been looking at one of the black/white vinyl backdrops that come in various lengths and width and roll up. Just need to work out what size would be best for size and shooting options etc.

I've seen a video of a guy simply using hot water in a span can to remove creases in 20 seconds. I plan on using clamps to pull it taut so I was hoping that they, along with the water would remedy any serious creases.

I have 4 rolls of this http://www.photography-backgrounds.co.uk/Photography-Background-Papers/1.35-x-11-metres.html
Works a treat and easy fits in a car, even a Micra. You can get 4 rolls for £90 which is decent and gives you plenty of options, I bought white, black, grey and orange. Easy to store too as they fit under the width of a double bed.

Thank you for the recommendation but the width of those paper rolls simply isn't enough for my needs.
