Poor auto focus with zoom lens

Hi All

I'm just getting back into photography having moved from old Nikon F70 to a D80.

I am using an older autofocus sigma 70-300 lens. I'm having autofocus trouble with it at between 70-135 zoom setting. All seems ok further than that and with my other lenses.

Is this just a cheap lens problem or could it be more?

Does your body have any kind of micro lens adjustment (not being familiar with Nikon kit)?

If so reset it back to it's default of 0.

There doesn't seem to be any adjustment on my Nikon. It's pin sharp on the 18-55mm VR lens. Next stop I think is to pop into a camera shop and try it on a genuine Nikon 70-300mm lens and then look at the test result on my mac.
