Just wondering as to which format would be best to upload images in....

The one I'm using atm...and also my most often used...is a flat screen 'square type' (5:4 ratio) as I've had it quite a while and has served me well.

However, I also use our laptop and that is the usual widescreen and is a 16:10 ratio that I run at 1440x900 resolution.

There's no doubt that images viewed in full screen - rather than having the fill-in borders when not in the correct format - have more impact and effect.

37 views and not one response

1920 x 1200 & 1650 x 1080 . I find the widescreen gives me room for tools down the side & the photo maximised for editing.

Do I get some cake for replying ?? :D

I don't understand the question, upload to what? You ask about format (ratio ie: 3:4 or 16:10) but you seem to mean resolution ie: 800 x 600, 1650 x 1080. More details needed to answer you, Also I see no poll!

Tara

P.S. all my screens (5) are 16 x 10, 3 @ 1650 x 1080 and 2 @ 1440 x 900. I'm up for cake too, but not coconut please :D

My lappy is widescreen, running at 1280x800. My desktop has an old TFT that runs at 1024x768.

My machine is widescreen, but I guess it depends on the pictures - if you're shooting mostly landscapes, then widescreen is a no-brainer, but for other fields of photography (product shots for example) then there isn't anything, necessarily, to gain.

If it helps though, the general consensus for making web sites (so you could argue the same should be for images) is to make them so that they work and look good on the lowest common denominator of machine. Perhaps if you wanted to go all swish, you could have a gallery that had a choice of resolutions to view it at?

Cheers,
James

It really depends on what applications you are using.

I use a windscreen monitor for Lightroom as it was really designed for this format. Photshop works well on this as well as you have more room for tools. But Photoshop will happily work with a second monitor as well to house the tools.

The second monitor option works with Lightroom as well as you can can use it as an auxiliary viewing platform,

Thanks for the replies

I've only had a dslr since August and have since started my flickr account.

When I'm resizing to upload, I'm never sure whether to resize/crop to 5:4 or 16:10 ratio, so that the viewer can see them full screen - purely so they look better that's all.

Looking at your replies so far, it seems widescreen is the most popular format so far and is likely to be so from now on I guess.

Looks like from now on, it'll be that for my uploads methinks ;)

With to regards to the practicality of actually using the two type of screens - I agree, the WS format on my lappy is much better for ease of using the tools pallette in CS3.

Hmmmm.....christmas is coming aint it :naughty:

..... Also I see no poll!

Couldn't suss out to post this topic as an actuall poll.....can anyone explain how it's done? There usually a button or tick box somewhere to 'post as a poll' but I couldn't find one

start the thread, then report to admin with the message please make a poll:thumbs:

only admins can set polls

How do you adjust a widescreen so that it doesn't stretch the images ?

Just today I plugged one in and all my photos on picasa look fat...

I've tried every setting (I think) and cant get it to unstretch my images...

If you right-click on the desktop & select personalise/properties (Vista/XP) then select display settings it should show what your graphics card is set to. Adjust this to match your screen resolution & that *should* sort it.

Sorted now,

I had to update the driver as the necarssary resolution was not listed.

Tis now and all is well...

Cheers

As you were !!!...

WoW, a monitor on your windscreen. Does that mean you can edit your photos while you're driving.

SORRY !!

Back on topic, to be honest I didn't really understand the OP question. My laptop runs at 1280x800

Don't crop the pictures to fit a screen size, do it so the crop is best for the image

Yes ppp - you're right of course. I use faststone to crop my images and that gives me a crop option to maintain whatever ratio you want just by dragging the 'handles' of the crop box so you can get the best crop for whatever ratio screen you want....very handy!

Both my main desktop and laptop run 1920x1200 although shortly I will be upgrading the desktop to 2560x1600. I much prefer one very large display to several smaller displays although my laptop will run at 1920x1200 with an external 24" monitor displaying another 1920x1200 (somewhat difficult to lug round though ! :)).
