I'm literally just starting out in the world of studio photography. I'm not doing this professionally, purely as an avid amateur. As such I don't have tons to spend here and so I'm looking to limit my costs where it makes sense and can be done without false economies.

So, I've been looking at Flash Meters. They are hugely diverse in their range of features, and of course price. I've found this Polaris Flash Meter which seems very reasonable for what it does.

Has anyone any experience of these? I don't expect it to be of professional quality but I would at least like some assurance that it's fairly consistent in measuring the light (don't want wildly differing values from sampling the same point multiple times).

The unit itself can be viewed here

I have this flash meter. It does the job fine. To be honest, I don't use it as much as I should though. It's a very handy thing to have, especially if you've just started using your camera on manual.
Not really sure what I can say about it.

But I can tell you that there are professionals who use this flash meter.

i've had one  worked fine for me
i did not use it much so sold it :bang:

now i want another:thumbs:

there is a 2nd hand one in the for sale forum good price imo:thumbs:

Excellent. Sounds like just the job! Thanks for the heads up in MD about the one for sale

Basically all flash meters do the same job in that all the ones I've tested seem to give the same readings. For example, the Jessops cheapie of a few years ago produced almost the same results as my Minolta V - the difference seems to be in the features and build quality, not the accuracy.

So I'm inclined to say that although the Polaris doesn't top the list in either build quality or features, it should do the job.

I have just been through all this soul searching in the last few weeks. I looked at the Polaris but ended up with the Sekonic L308S at £129. Just got it yesterday and it works fine. I think the Sekonic is probably the better known and there is a guy Steve Aves who did a report on it. YOu can get him at steveaves@tiscali.co.uk:clap:

Hmm...could be an option. I see it listed at onestop for £111. Seems very cheap.

I've just done a quick google.

And you can pick up a pre-owned one here

£84 - I'm not sure if that comes with the extra attachment, if it does, then bonus!

Or if you prefer to buy a brand new one, then Jessops have it for £108

108 for brand new! That's the best price I've seen so far.

I'm looking to get one next week. Still buying the stuff to get the studio finished first.

Thanks everyone.
