After what seems like months of saving, I've now got £1,450 burning a hole in my pocket BUT what do I buy? I used to have Canon gear way back in the AE1 days (remember them?). I'm starting from scratch really.

Not into one particular genre but I guess I'd mainly be shooting Motorsport, Aviation, Wildlife.

After ready loads of mags and online reviews I'm more confused than when I started. Do I go for something like a D90/50D (17-85is & 70-300is) deal now they're coming to the end of their days or do I go down the D300/7D route and slowly build up the lenses over time

Any advice welcomed!
 
Firstly go to yer local store try both sets out for how they feel in your hands take a memory card and take some test shots (any decent store will allow this) then make an informed desicion after going home looking at the images and deciding which felt better in your hands and was easier to use and get the feel of... ps only digital so no idea what the one you had before was as for the whole Canon Nikon debate they leapfrog each other so often it is redundant ...

It will mainly be down to prefernce in hand. I have nikon since it felt better than the comparable Canon (large mits)... As fer the type well the fact you state Motorsport and Aviation I would suggest the D300(s) and D50 route since the frame rate would suite best shop around HUGE deals to be had the mo since both now have replacements in place or due....
As for the replacements personally I would watit till the teething issues are dealt with I have a mate who's 7D has already been back to Canon for repair for the Banding thing and Noise issues at get this ISO 100 so the older gear is better till this sorted...


Disclaimer .... Alll views expressed above are from a guy who reads too much and gets to shoot too little....

AF performance will be very important, which leaves Canon 1-series, 7D (if you get a good one - not tried one myself), or Nikon D300 and looks like the D7000 will be something to consider. Probably a used D300 is the cheapest good option.

7D. I've never used one but i just recenty upgraded and was asking alot of questions. From the responses i got the 7D is the one you need. I didnt need it for sports or wildlife so i ended up the the 5D...
 
Have to say, narrow down your options by holding the cameras first. See which you prefer both from an in your and and ergonomics point of view. That will make you firstly decide between Nikon and Canon.

For the subjects you mention you can't go far wrong with a D300s/D7000
 
For the subjects you mentioned you'll need a long lens (300mm+ on a crop). I'd suggest keeping this in mind when looking at cameras as it would be easy to spend everything on a body and kit lens and be very frustrated at the results.

Have you considered an older S/H camera e.g. D200 / 40D for £450 (the main improvements since these are High ISO and I doubt this would be an issue for you) and spend 1K on long lens (TBH to really get the best you'll be looking at 3K+ for the best lenses)
